I am planning to get an external hard drive soon and im not sure what brand to get. I have heard mixed reviews about LaCie drives, but their reconditioned 250GB USB2 HD is only $90 plus $10 shipping. Just want some advice on whether to buy it or not.

as a side note i heard that you can now boot from USB2 on intel macs, is that true.

Mine works fine but recon...?

I have that model bought brand new and it works great but I'm always wary about reconditioned stuff and prefer to buy brand new for a little extra money. I guess if they've just stuck a brand bew HD in an old case then you can't go wrong, if that's what they do.Presumably you'd get a warranty with it?

I bought a 250GB Firewire LaCie HD about two weeks ago and haven't had any issues with it at all. I was quite surprised at how small it actually was. My only complaint is that the firewire cable which came with it was rather short so I'll probably have to buy a longer one.

it has a 90 day warranty. its an extra $50 to get the new HD (over a 50% increase) and don't feel it is worth it.

I got that exact same one about a month ago, brand new. It had of the rubber feet missing, and there was something rattling inside! It also took an unusually long time for finder to recognise it! But I took it back and got a new one, and it works perfectly now.:)

They are pretty cheap at BestBuy, 125$ for 200gig. I've been waiting to find a nice deal on fatwallet for a LaCie drive but seems like only Seagate & Wester Digital's get marked down.

I've got a LaCie d2 Big Disk Extreme Triple Interface 500GB (how's that for a mouthful)? It's absolutely wonderful -- extremely quiet, space-saving, bundled with useful software. I was actually thinking about selling off my other external HDs and buying 2x 500GB or 1x 1.2TB from LaCie's refurbished page.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted by a Formac. They're rubbish. Mine sounds like a wind tunnel (it's tough to talk on the phone while sitting next to it) and never spins down. Sometimes it grinds and clunks on power-on. And all that is *after* a trip to their repair shop, with postage at my expense. I hate the damn thing.

So, right, go LaCie.
