I had been using a Powerbook that died on me a couple days ago... so I went and got myself an iMac. Problem I am having is getting my external hard drive to show up on my new machine. I have attached a picture from disk utility that shows the drive is there... but why isn't it showing up in finder? Thanks,

Here is the screenshot I meant to post

sorry.....

yeah, i got a similar problem, i am a ex-PC user and after switching over to a macbook i got myself an harddrive bay thing that lets me connect my SATA HDD with a usb/firewire rather than a IDE connection.

since the drive was used on a PC, it is in formatted in NTFS and at first i thought it was to do with leopard not being able to read/write ntfs, so i downloaded ntfs-3g and macfuse hoping to get a result but no joy.

the problem wasn't because i couldn't mount it, i think the OS just has troubles reading the drive, i know the bay is working ok, but i have no idea as to why the FS cannot be mounted.

when i boot up, leopard just says "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" "initialize..." "ignore" "eject"

ignore and eject don't help and initialize just takes me to the disk tool, but every option is greyed out. I thought it meant my drive was currupted but it isn't because i used disk warrior and it said it wasn't supported and it didn't do i damn thing (i have sent an email requesting a refund, grrrr)

it said the file system is unsupported.

i will post several screenshots, any help will be very appreciated.

I am using a new iMac 24" 2.4 Ghz and use external hard drives.

I use a Western Digital MyBook via FIREWIRE and 2 Western Digital USB drives with no problems.

Do you have another HDD to try? I suspect you might have an issue with the HDD.

I have had similar error messages when I insert a bad DVD in an external DVD burner.

no unfortunatly i don't have another hdd that i can access at the moment, i don't think that is the problem though, its simply leopard can't read it as an ntfs, i don't think the bay or my MB has anything to do with the problem.....

edit: sorry just read what you said lol, let's say it's my hdd, is there any way i can get some data back off it without a pc?? i just need to access some logic files on it....

I have two external disks of itunes files . I am getting a mac pro in the not to near future

both disks are formatted ntfs.. How can I move those itunes files that the mac can recognize?

Easiest way I can think of is transferring them to another drive formatted in FAT32, or when you get your new computer network the new and old and transfer via the network.

fat 32 is limited. I would have to get a terabyte hard drive as the backup . format it as f32 in multiple partitions and then drag them over to the mac pro

I plan on using 2 750 gig hard drives.

a little off topic
is the raid card worth it for the home?

no mate, i would leave it at ntfs, there are 3rd party stuff out there that lets you R/W ntfs on leopard, have a look around for ntfs-3g for macs
