Hey!
I am thinking about buying an external hard drive, about 40GB in size. But the thing I wanted to know is, when you install software onto your mac, and you get to the install screen where the mac hard drive icon shows with the green arrow going into it, will I have the option there to install the software to the external hard drive only?

I think it depends on the software you install.
I am pretty sure my second internal drive always has a red x over it, but not positive.
Has to do with system files being on the drive most likely.

Most software that comes with an installer will only install to your boot/system disk, often because they are going to install some system modifiers.

But not all, if the installer is there just to "dump" an application and maybe some read me files into a folder and put that in your /Applications folder, then you should be able to choose the external.

Some applications will also let you move the application file after you've installed them and still work, regardless of how the were installed. Note that moving applications may mess with (auto) updaters...

And remember: Patience is a virtue... ;)

It is your world and money, my friend. But, 40GB should be free to be a good deal.
