I need to back up my work macbook - I am copying all my files from an external HDD and want to format it to use with Macbook. At the moment it doesnt let me copy files to it from macbook.

Once the HDD is clean I want to use it to back up all my files from work macbook to work NEW macbook.

So what HDD format do I use on the HDD?

Help and Thanks!

My opinion only.

If you're going to use an external drive with a Mac, ALWAYS initialize it to a "Mac format".

You want "HFS+ with journaling enabled".

Things just seem to work better this way...

You want to use the Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format shown in this section of the erase tab in Disk Utility.

If you are only going to use the HDD with Macs, I suggest HFS+. Personally I prefer EXFAT for all of my interoperating system needs.
