External HDDs disconnecting spontaneously

I have a recurring problem with the Ext HDDs randomly disconnecting, nearly always overnight, not always the same drive, might be a USB connection or , more often recently, a Thunderbolt connection. If I unplug and replug the connectors the drive "appears" again in Finder.
Should I try replacing the cables? Is there some other likely cause?
iMac is late 2012, 3 ext drives connected, 2 to Thunderbolt the other USB.
