Hello, I record videos on my Mac with an external microphone which has 2 rings connected to my Mac through a splitter which has 3 rings. My external microphone used to work just fine. I didn't use it for a few weeks and now when I try to plug it in, my iMac doesn't recognize that there is an external microphone in the Sound preferences. I know my microphone works fine because it works on my iPhone and I also know that my headphone port on my iMac is fine because it works properly with a headset which has 3 lines on the headphone jack. I tried restarting and even resetting the NVRAM but no luck. It doesn't show up in Audio MIDI either. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Since it's the holiday season, might be time to splurge just a little, and get a nice USB mic... ;)
Tip: the best option is to get a USB mic that also has a built-in headphone jack for monitoring.

Another option:
A USB audio convertor that will accept a mic (mini plug) input, such as the Griffin "iMic". There are many similar items out there, most very affordable.

The question is how did it just suddenly stop working?
