I'm asking this for someone else, so I don't have the MacBook in front of me.
Anyway, they use the Apple External Modem with their MacBook to connect to their dial up connection. Up until recently, they could connect without problems. In the past week, however, some storms went through and now they can't get on reliably... It's possible that the phone line was connected to the modem during the storm, but I don't know. I also don't know if it was even a lightning storm. By any means, most of the time now all they get is an authentication error, but they've had their password reset by MSN and they know they're using the correct username. MSN finally gave up and they say it's a software or modem issue. I'm not convinced; the modem is brand new (unless it got struck) and their telephone lines are less than stellar- they live in a rural part of Colorado. So, is it most likely the modem or the telephone lines, or is it something else? They have Mac OS X 10.4.8, I believe (dial-p does not allow for easy updating.)
