I want to use my hdtv as an external monitor with my iMac, to be used as an extended desktop so I can view movies (using front row) I have saved on my iMac on the tv while still being able to use my iMac for other things.

Which adapters would I need to make this happen if I want to hook up the tv via hdmi? And would using hdmi transfer both video and sound to my tv from my iMac?

Since the iMac has mini-dvi connection, then mini-dvi to DVI connection then use 3.5mm sound cable Male to Male for the audio on the external screen...

I don't like to have too many cables all over the place so I was wondering if there was a way to use hdmi cables, so that I dont need to run seperate cables for the audio.

no, there isn't a way to run a HDMI cable from an iMac, and still get sound. The easiest way to do this, is order a mini DVI to DVI cable, and connect the tv to the iMac that way. If you want sound you need to get a 3.5 inch male to male audio cable.
