External monitor keeps waking up

The 4k Samsung external monitor is connected with a USB-c cable. When MacBook pro-2019 goes to sleep, the monitor goes to sleep as well, but about 20 seconds later the monitor wakes up for no reason and MacBook wakes up for 1 second and then they both go to sleep and then once again after 20 seconds process begins again. Sleep, wake up, sleep, wake up... When the MacBook wakes up it shows a 100% battery ? icon and then goes to sleep.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

This is the log that keeps repeating. Maybe you know something about it. I'm assuming it has to do something with the power.

Because it has something to do with speech and bluetooth can wake the computer, my guess it is something to do with Siri and there maybe is bluetooth microphone/speaker connected. But it is a wild guess. I have disabled wake by bluetooth on my iMac, though that come with disadvantage, that trackpad/mouse and keyboard must be detected everytime and it can take some seconds or even not work (I have magic trackpad & keyboard, so I can always force detection by connecting the lightningcable)

This will not "fix the problem".
But it might be a "workaround".

Why not just reach forward and turn off the display when you won't be using it for a while?

Let the computer go to sleep by itself. It worked for me. If I put the computer to sleep manually, the monitor will wake up.

Something similar happened to me as well, not frequently enough to be annoying. It was caused by powernap, whenever it was doing some powernap activity it would wake the monitor as well.
It seems weird that it happens every 20 seconds, but might be worth to try turning it off and see if it continues.

sadly that is not the same behaviour for me, it continues to annoy me with the charging sound every now and then which wakes my external monitor too! How random

Here are my settings. I have an M1 and intel MacBook and this problem is the same for both of the computers. I use them as clamshell mode.

Aah! excellent, so ticking the option to prevent mac to go to automatically sleep when the display is off worked for me! I just have to wait till the display goes off as you mentioned last. This though is just a workaround I guess, but I don't really care as far as it's working for me. lol! Many thanks, again.

Just found that the issue isn't the Mac, it's the Dell monitor turning off USB-C charging whenever it goes into sleep mode. This causes the Mac to wake the monitor back up to restore power. The solution is to change this setting on the monitor by configuring: personalize -> USB-C Charging > On During Power Off (default is Off During Power Off, which causes the Mac to wake it back up).

It happens when the MBP falls asleep on its own and also when I initiate sleep. In both cases it goes through the power notification and back to sleep cycle endlessly and sometimes restarts the MBP.

Anyone found reliable fix for this (not workaround)?

Edit. I suspect that the monitor somehow cuts power after a while which in turn wakes up MBP but Samsung S80UA 27 in 4K monitor doesn't seem to have "On During Power Off" option like DELL, unfortunately.

I ended up buying a HDMI to USB C to solve the problem. Moving away from the DisplayPort to USB C cable that kept allowing the monitor to always awake from sleep.

Haven't had the issue since.

Have any of you already been able to solve the problem? I own 3 different MacBooks and have this annoying problem. A 2015 15" Retina, a 2019 16" Intel MacBook and a 2021 M1 Max.

I have the additional problem that a connected headset, external hard drive, and external SSD also constantly turn on and off when the MacBook is in sleep mode.

Only workaround is to disconnect all peripherals and then put the MacBook into sleep mode. But that can't really be it?

I noticed that the MacBook turns on all the peripherals briefly when I receive an email, for example. It doesn't matter if the mail programs are open. I can also turn off all the notifications, nothing helps.

Does anyone already have a solution?

I have determined the exact behavior with a Samsung LS27A600UUNXGO (27 QHD USB-C monitor). Came to same conclusion. Unfortunately no firmware updates

Please explain how you power the MBP? Wall outlet -> USBC charger brick -> USBC cord -> then what (hub, LG display). If the USBC cord directly into the MBP works properly with a separate USBC cord to the display, then the issue is the hub within the monitor.

But all in all it’s like a lottery. Next OS update might break it again. If one want’s to have problem free experience, third party monitors are not an option, unfortunately.

Found a solution that might work for some cases. Turn sleep off when display off and connected to external power supply. Seems not so bad on M1s as it converges towards iPhone/iPad.

I had the same problem for my LG 38UC99-W monitor connected via USB-C to my M1 Mac Mini. I solved the wake up problem by updating monitor's firmware. You can find the firmware on LG website with your monitor's model number. Colors and text quality also improved after the update.

Probably it will help, the issue for me was in programs that have access to the microphone and/or camera. E.g. when I had a call with Zoom and Zoom after that was working (not closed) - the monitor woke up constantly, if I closed Zoom - the monitor slept fine. The same with Slack. If I have at least one call with Slack - the monitor will not sleep, but if I just restart it - the monitor will sleep. I have MBP M2 Pro Max and monitor connected via HDMI.
