Have seen related threads on this and done all the troubleshooting.

It seems like something may have changed with the most recent update of Monterey 12.4. I could be wrong.

When connecting my 16" M1 Macbook Pro to my external monitor (Samsung G9), I was always able to close the Macbook Pro, put it in clamshell mode and the display would show my content.

Doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Display goes blank when I close the Macbook Pro case.

I did go into Battery and indicate I did not want the MacBook Pro put to sleep when I closed the lid. That did nothing.

I am connected to a power source (USB power through a Caldigit dock) when using the Macbook Pro and the display.

So, I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem that I never had until the recent update.

Probably a stretch but the only thing I noticed that had changed with display type stuff is that universal control is now enabled by default. Maybe try turning that off if it’s on…

Not me, but did you work it out?

No, but looking at the lack of response here and/or additional complaints it doesn't seem to be a common issue at the moment. So, I am wondering what changed over the past two weeks since I last connected my laptop to the screen. The only thing I can think of is the OS upgrade.

Have you gone into the trackpad settings to check everything is setup as you want it?

Ever since I upgraded my Intel MBP to 12.4 I've had nothing but trouble with driving an external monitor in clamshell mode. Despite turning off sleep on close, and installing a utility (NoSleep) that claims to prevent it as well, half the time when I close the lid the machine goes into a coma, no video, unresponsive even after re-opening the lid and disconnecting all the external gear (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.). I never had this issue prior to upgrade.

Really hoping it gets addressed in the next patch release.

I have the same issue on two external displays on the M1 Max chip mac. But only one display goes black when I close the lid. Then I uninstall the DisplayLink and it's resolved after reboot.

I'm not sure if that could help you.

I have an issue where the external display freezes ( doesn't go black ) when I clamshell the mbp ! As soon as I reopen the lid, the external display starts working!!
