Hey Guys,

So I am thinking to hook an external Monitor to my iPad Pro, there are some APPS which help you take advantage of the full screen on the Monitor and not just show you letter box display. But I am confused here my main activity, purpose to hook an external monitor is to mainly watch YouTube, Netflix and Movies in the TV APP but the iPad Pro does not support and Resolution more than 1080P !

So does it make sense to buy a Ultra HD Monitor like 1440P or a 4K Monitor when the content I am gonna be consuming is not gonna be more than 1080P ? Should I buy only 1080P Monitors or higher ? what do you guys suggest ?

No, just get a regular 1080p monitor.

Wait, are you using an iPad Pro?

Which iPad do you have? Lightning will only support 1080p but USB-C will support 4K. Not sure which apps will stream from the iPad at 4K, though.

If the cost difference is worth it, I say just get the 4K monitor. That way if you decide to use it for anything else that supports 4K, you’re good to go. It will still show a great 1080p image, so you’re not losing anything with that upgrade (depending on monitor choice, of course). Basically, I’m saying future proofing can be a good idea sometimes.

Yes ! Why ?

But my usage with the Monitor is going to be for Watching Movies, Netflix, YouTube and none of this render Video more than 1080P on the iPad Pro? So what do I do of a 4K or an Ultra HD Monitor ? It is a waste ? is it not ? As fas as an APP is concerned, who gets to know if an APP is showing in normal quality or 4K, what difference does it make anyways ? An App is an APP ?

The cost difference between a 1080P monitor and an Ultra HD Monitor or a 4K Monitor is quite a bit, not just some dollars but sizable amount ! Yes only for Future proofing is what one may suggest. But right now none of the Content Providers YouTube, Netflix even Apple's own TV APP which comes as an Native APP Support anything any quality more than 1080P !! So ?

Netflix will stream 4k on the Premium plan.

You can 4K or 5K. USB-C

From Apple Support
iPad Pro uses the DisplayPort protocol to support connections to USB-C displays with resolutions up to 5K. To connect iPad Pro to high-resolution displays, use a USB-C cable that supports high-bandwidth connections, such as the cable included with the display, the Belkin USB-C to USB-C Cable, or the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) Cable (sold separately).2

I honestly cannot answer your question but I find it quite interesting. Sucks for me that I cannot contribute. Just because I am interested I asked Google about things like that - Is A 4K Monitor Worth It?, Should You Buy a 4K Computer Monitor?

I kind of see your point it is more expensive. Future proofing would make sense if you think that in say 1 year you will be able to use it but if you have to wait like 5-6 years maybe it is not worth it. And if you say you pay for the 4K monitor would you be able take full advantage of it in anyway.

Based on what I see I guess you can find some benefits if you:

1. Play games on gaming console
2. It seems it could help for photo and video editing (if you use the iPad this way at all)
3. It can be used for streaming under two conditions it seems - the app supports it like you mentioned and quite reliable connection for the streaming service itself

Sorry that I could not help more.

4K content streamed from Netflix to my 4K TV certainly looks 4k - the TV doesn't explicitly tell me.

Actually the thing about Netflix is even after you have selected the highest plan when you go in Netflix settings and select the best quality there is no way to verify or find out which Movie is available in 4K and what quality are you getting ? (I think that is the case, I may be wrong)

On the iPad, you can search their app on 4K and their video descriptions will usually say Dolby Vision. On my non-4K laptop, those same listings will only indicate HD - 1080p.

It does. I have done it on a monitor and a TV.

I was wondering why does this place, MacRumors Forum not have a separate Category for Purchasing help on Accessories for iPad. The Accessory Industry is such a Huge market and can get very vast and diverse, And people may neeed some help regarding it. Why isn’t there a Purchasing Help for a Monitor Kind of section here ? Or is there ? I do not see one.
