External monitor with Mavericks

Running Mavericks on a Macbook Pro. External monitor requires Macbook pro to be closed in order to work at correct resolution. Is there a way round this?

In System Prefereneces, you most likely have the monitor configured to “mirror” the laptop display, which is why the resolution changes when the laptop is open vs closed.

Thank you. That was useful. I now have to proceed by trial and error to deal with a host of other problems like the dock disappearing, like not being able to open 2 files in Logic Pro, like the cursor sometimes disappearing, and some of my keyboard short cuts no longer working. I'm sure I will find solutions and work-arounds eventually.
