So, this is for a friend who will be buying multiple iMacs between home and office (for him and an employee and will be buying at least two and possibly three).

I know folks will argue about effort and efficiency in light of a few hundred dollars, but that's not the point.

So, my friend wants to buy base model 27" iMacs on Amazon ($1,725 each), and he wants to run them off of external USB-C drives (Crucial X8 512GB SSD at $120, but he would be open to other suggestions with similar characteristics) and 16gb upgrades (OWC $70). So, with tax included, he'll be paying approximately $412 less per unit than if he bought an iMac with 3.0/16gb/512gb/570x.

Now, I know the read and write speeds will be half/slightly less than half of what you would get with the internal ssd, but he's not going to be dealing with large files or heavy imaging work. I also know that you need to disable the T2 chip in a recovery mode boot. Would there be any other issues? Would this cause long term issues with the CPU or motherboard? How long will the external drive set up work?

I too am interested in responses to your post. I bought the 3.7 GHz model from Amazon at a drastically reduced price. Doing a custom order from Apple would have cost me $350 more for a 512 ssd. I will save a lot adding an external drive after splitting the fusion drive. I was under the impression there are 512 external drives that are as fast as built in like the Samsung 5x.

" I also know that you need to disable the T2 chip in a recovery mode boot. "

iMacs (other than the iMac Pro) do not have t2 chips. Not yet.

My advice:
Tell your friend to buy from the Apple Refurbished store and get the models with SSD's pre-installed (with 8gb of RAM). Add RAM as required.

If these are for business use, isn't he going to "write off" his expenses for equipment, in any case?

With the savings on each machine, he can buy a Fujitsu scanner.

yeah, he could just expense it, but he is a penny pinched. lol
