im looking for 2tb min external storage solution for my media .. i have the backpack shelf so i would like to be able to store it on that and keep it out of sight .. i know it can hold up to 5lbs .. which one are you guys using ?

I use the LaCie 4 big Quadra with 4 swappable drives each available up to 2TB each, but you can start with 4 500GB drives configured in RAID 1, for example. They also make smaller backup units with 2 drives in them.

What is crucial for me is that when in RAID1 if a drive goes out you can swap in a new one and it copies over to the new drive automatically. This brings you right back to having 2 perfectly mirrored sides.

western digital...

I have two WD 4tb drives off my i7. They have a quad interface (firewire 800, 400, USB2 & SATA), are dead quiet, and all at a good price (around $389 at Amazon).

You could take a look at Seagates new 3TB behemoth if you want it to be a single drive rather than two or more drives in RAID. It has option for FireWire 800 as well and the price ain't bad

thanks for the all the suggestions. I originally want a G-raid 4tb setup but it will not fit on the shelf on the back of the imac .. and i want to keep it back there .. I was considering the WD 4tb one but i heard it has issues .. runs really really hot on is incredibly slow ? is this true ???

the 3tb seagate is out ?? ill check it out

just checked it out .. seems like it costs 199 but then u need the 37 dollar firewire 800 base .. so not quite sure if i feel like getting that or not

Well, the cheapest 2TB FW800 drive I found from NewEgg was 170$. That's 85$ per TB while that 3TB Seagate is 79$ per TB with FW800. Not bad deal IMO

true .. is it 7200rpm do u know .. didnt see any info on the cache size or the speed

It's 7200rpm and has 32MB of cache. Those aren't that big deals as the interface (yes, even FireWire) isn't fast enough to take advantage of the full speed of the drive.

which kinda sucks but oh well nothing i can do about it:(

as far as drobo .. its great and all but the drobo S i think it is cost like almost 700

Assuming you only need 2TB right now (possibly more later), I'd go with the OWC Mercury bare kit (Quad interface) and then your choice of drive elsewhere. By the time you need more than 2TB just put in a bigger drive - or you could get a dual and take care of it now - they're not much more and OWC has lots of options.
