Couldn't watch keynote. Was there any mention of it being possible?

External storage was not mentioned I think. Just cameras and external monitors were shown. Relatively little was said about what functionality is included and what not.

SO do you think you would be able to connect with a hard drive with the usb C?

Yes... in the same way that a USB thumbdrive can and with the same limitations. Though that USB harddrive would most likely need its own power source.

Based on the fact that they highlighted the ability to charge other devices with the iPad, I expect the power limitation to be gone at least.

That's a reasonable conclusion. But I think it will depend upon what charge rate is sent out of the Pro and the power requirement of the harddrive.

They just continue to make such slow baby steps with the iPad in terms of becoming a full blown computer replacement… It’s really rather frustrating
"Frustrating" is an understatement for me. I've stopped waiting and am working with alternatives (until a time when Apple delivers what I'm looking for) :)

Maybe… They probably locked it down with a chip so only certain devices can even do the charging.

Remember Tim wants to make sure to sell as many licenses and specifically overpriced dongle’s as possible

I hear you… I can’t believe it but I’m pretty serious about making my next laptop a Thinkpad at this point

Well not quite… That external display support up to 5K is pretty different

But a 5K display doesn't make that much sense on a touch screen device...You need to interact and look at the iPad display all the time. The external display can only be a mirror (but not with 5K) or a presentation display....This is mostly used for beamers but not with 5K...

Yeah I agree that’s why I’m curious to see how much closer it is to being able to plug it into a 5K display but use a keyboard to interact with it… And then hopefully at some point they’ll add an external mouse or trackpad support.

I recently bought a Thinkpad. Would have been willing to sell it if there was a backlit keyboard with mouse/trackpad support. All their competition has it. It is just plain stubbornness. It would be SO easy for a trillion dollar company to add this support. I'll be keeping the Thinkpad!

Yes! If you do that (and a little more) you have a hybrid device like the Yoga or the Surface (but much better...). Hope we will see this some day....(and maybe sracer is also back in then...)

“I also saw it connect to a camera, which automatically popped open the camera roll import screen, but we’ve confirmed that it will not support external storage over USB-C.“

Oh Apple....

And let’s be clear… This is really because bean counter Tim wants to sell massively overpriced internal storage upgrades.

This is what is so frustrating about Apple. They are hamstringing Products to the detriment of their consumers to squeeze every last penny out of them possible

what a let down.. $799 for 64gb on a pro device that used for artist? I do renderings that easily take up 3 or 4gb of space on their own. what a joke. guess apple isn't ready to compete with the surface pro's yet
That is why Apple sells a 1TB option for the iPad Pro.

As for competing with the Surface Pro... why should they? iPad Pro sales far outweigh Surface Pro sales. These new iPad Pros aren't going to change that.

I had been saying over the last couple of weeks for people not to expect that the inclusion of USB-C implies anything beyond a format-change. From the get-go, Apple has been deliberately keeping the iPad restricted in its support for peripherals.

well from their keynote, they are appealing to the architecture, landscape architecture, and civil engineering market (by showing hey look we can run autocad and do photoshop) and yet I know several firms that I work with, including the one I am at, require usb to be able to go anywhere and show our work on the fly. not having that ability with iPad is huge miss for our market. Yes, there are ways around to make it work, but the portability factor and ease of desktop to iPad isn't there. just my thought. I am still sticking with $799 for 64gb is ridiculous. 128gb needs to be the base minimum

I agree with you. I'm simply stating that Apple doesn't care. Their position is, "if you want an iPad Pro for your business, you'll have to use it the way we want you to." That has always been their position.

And rather than businesses move on to alternatives that DON'T have those limitations, they suck it up, make changes to their workflows, and pay a premium for the "privilege" of having to implement those workarounds.

If Apple were to make the 128GB the base minimum, they would increase the MSRP accordingly. The entry-level storage is primarily to keep the starting MSRP down. They always have, and always will, have entry-level storage that is sufficient for many but insufficient for most... causing them to pay significantly more.
