External USB hard drive for Apple TV

Does anyone know if you can hang an external USB drive off an Apple TV to add more storage space.

Hang on. It's not as simple as that is it?

Do you need to do anything to get the atv to recognize it?

I thought the USB port was for service only or am I talking?
