The USB port of the MacBook Air has very low power and it is not being able to power my LaCie 250GB drive without having the hard drive connected to its independent power source. i am having to plug in not only my computer to external power, but i also have to connect the drive to an independet power source. can someone recommend a drive that works on with the MacBook Air that can work without independent power?

I found this through google.
Looks like it'll work with just bus power through the Air.

This issue is also of great importance to me. On my old gen MBP one USB port (the left one) is fine whereas the other is not (the left one). Since my on-order MBA Gen 2 has only one USB port, I really want it to work fine.

apeisach, which MBA do you have ? The new one or the old one ?
The article linked by jessica was written in may, so it obviously applies to the old gen MBA.

Actually, I think the MBA has a higher power output than other typical USB ports. This was discussed quite a bit in regards powering the USB Superdrive.

I have both 1st and 2nd iteration of the MBA. I'm using a passport USB drive powered by the USB port only. It works fine on both units.

Isn't the passport what I linked to? Or do they vary? I was considering picking one up myself (the one I linked to).

works fine

I have the same LaCie 250Gb tiny black USB hard drive
worked fine with my MacBook Air (rev 1)
works with our G5, new MacBook, old MacBook and old Powerbook.

NONE of these need the power connecting.

Have you got a NEW MacBook Air (in which case I'll worry, as I'm changing the new MacBook (screen, faulty trackpad) for a new Air

thanks
