Fewer people competing for those devices, means less chance I'll miss out on launch day acquisition of my phone.

Yes, it's also possible there will be a lot less availability of 1TB phones to begin with, which could put me in the same (or even worse!) position, depending on demand, but I like to live in the Land of Optimism, haha :)

I think the pessimistic view is more likely. With the M1 iPad Pros, the 1TB options sold out more quickly.

That is a fear of mine ... though I would imagine iPad Pro purchasers are more likely to want enhanced storage as compared to iPhone purchasers given the nature of the device is going to appeal more strongly to media creators.

That's true as well.

However, in my experience, they don't stock a lot of the pricier iPhone models in store because there are fewer people buying them. I remember when I got my iPhone 7, the ATT store associate mentioned they only got 1-2 of the 256GB in each color (except Jet Black which was non-existent). Most of their stock were 32-128GB.

What exactly does one do with 1 TB of storage on a phone?
The same that they do with the max storage offered by Apple on earlier devices. They store stuff.

Whenever I purchase a new iPhone I get the max storage. I don't ever have to worry about trying to clean out pictures or other items from the Messages app and I've got plenty of space for those few times where I need to store a big file or two. IMO, it's always better to have the space available and not need it then to need it and not have it.

Ah, but I can hear the iCloud people lining up to tell me that I can just pay Apple for more iCloud storage and get a device with less capacity. True!

But I have free services and one paid service (Dropbox, 3TB) for all of that. Consequently, I am able to keep iCloud storage below Apple's free 5GB cap.

1TB on an iPhone is overkill. Find me one person who does their entire workflow (even content creators on the go) on a iPhone. 1TB on an iPad yes please. 1TB on iPhone. Ehh. Will have to wait to see how this pans out

in 2018, the 1TB iPad Pro has 6 GB RAM vs the lower storage. Could the 1TB iPhone have higher RAM. Maybe. We’ll have to wait.

You can fit a solid 4 hours of ProRes video on it tho

While 1TB is tempting, I’m going to stick with 512 GB. Plus I’m only utilizing 40 gb. I mean I could easily get by with 256 GB but i’ll be recording lots of videos so i’ll go with the 512 gb instead.

1TB is a feel good gottahaveit thing. I'm sure 99.9% of users never exceed 128gb on their phone. And 99.9% with 1TB may never exceed 512gb. But if 1TB makes you feel good then go for it

I think this only happened because the 1TB iPad Pro came with 16gb of ram as opposed to 8. that Got me to jump up from a 256gb. Still undecided on 512 or 1TB

While that probably played a role, lack of supply is likely the biggest issue. I've seen this before with scarcity of 32GB iPhones while 16GB were plentiful. Also, on 512GB LTE 2017 iPad Pro versus lower end models.

Even on Macs, the standard configs are 256GB and 512GB. The 1TB and 2TB are limited to BTO.

With that said, it's all about supply and demand. If your local store only gets five 1TB configs but only 2 people are buying (before you), then you're good. :)

My 12 Pro Max is currently at 451GB of 512GB used. I was in the high 300's until this week when I filmed a couple hours of training video.

I have a ton of photos/videos on my phone along with some non-trivially sized apps and a bunch of downloaded YouTube videos (via Premium). I live, drive, walk, etc in an area that frequently has spotty coverage and I enjoy knowing I've got any content I might want to look at it, listen to, use, etc, with me (heck, even if I lived in an area with constant great coverage, there are still real advantages to having the data on you instead of remote). Much of it is just personal/family stuff, though I do have some large amounts of work related stuff as well.

Do I need all of that on my phone? No, probably not. But if I can pay a few extra bucks to let me carry it all on my phone? Absolutely.

I remember in 2018 when they introduced the XS Max in 512gb, I wasn’t sure if I wanted it, but come the preorder day, I decided to upgrade from my 2016 7+ 256gb, so I preordered the XS Max 512gb not at whatever time they opened, but in the afternoon east coast time, still got it launch day, hoping with so many saying the 13 isn’t worth upgrading that I get my 13 pro max 1tb launch day, set alarm will order when they open them.

My 512GB iPhone requires me to turn on Optimize Photos. I’d rather have everything on the iPhone. It’s quicker to look through photos and play videos and especially convenient on flights. I take 4K video on trips. So the 1TB will be a welcome upgrade for me. I’m not worried about how quickly it ships. I’m Willing to wait if needed.

I don't even have 1TB on my iMac. On iPhone? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Plus when you trade in your old iPhone with Apple, they don't take storage into account; they offer same money for 4GB iPhone or 4TB iPhone.

P.S. Who else had the original iPhone with 4GB of storage? I did, and I thought it was more than enough at the time 😂 How times have changed.

Frequently micromanaging content would annoy me a lot so I buy the storage I require and use the device as long as it suits my needs. I don't concern myself with trade-in values. With that said, on a phone, 128GB would be sufficient for me.

Not me. I waited until Apple released a 16GB model because I knew even 8GB would be too small.
