Extra Memory in my (woohoo!) NEW imac

Just about to order a NEW iMac, and am really pleased to see that the cost of adding memory has come down. Can someone tell me if there's a performance benefit in getting my 8GB as 2 x 4GB rather than 4 x 2GB - one is definitely a lot cheaper! I assume the benefit of 2 x 4GB is that there are still two free slots to go up to 16GB at a later date?

You are correct. One (2x4gb) is more expensive because the parts are more expensive and the consumer might be inclined to pay so they have open slots to upgrade later. The performance difference will be negligible.

Still, at 4 x 2 GB to get 8, it's still $160. For that extra $40, the cost of a single stick, you get Apple to cover the RAM for the duration of your warranty. While it might not be worth it to some people, when/if I order one of these, I'll go ahead and get it with the upgrade, simply for peace of mind.

There will be 2 x 2gb in there regardless. The last two would be 2 X $40.

Actually, if you buy the iMac with only 4gigs preinstalled, it's only 100 bucks to upgrade yourself with 2 more 2 gig'ers...

In case you didn't know, most (if not all) reputable RAM companies (Crucual, Mushkin, etc). Offer a lifetime warranty on their memory.

Once the 3 years is up with Apple you are left with no warranty. I am thinking that a lifetime warranty should offer more piece of mind.
