My 88 year old, very non tech savvy mother, has an iPhone with IOS 9.3.5 on it. The phone is having multiple hardware issue, but is still semi functional (when it wants to be!). There are two apps on the phone she uses every day (a password manager and a pill reminder app) that are no longer available at the App store.

I have an old phone I want to giver her that has IOS 10 (and the apps will run on 10), but when I restore the phone from a backup the apps are missing since they are not in the App store any longer. I also tried iBackup Bot to try to extract the apps but was unsuccessful at extracting the apps.

Is there anyway to get these apps off the phone (non jailbroken), or otherwise? There is now way she is going to learn how to use new apps!

Unless the two apps were previously downloaded in iTunes etc., you are out of luck, unless you can find the apps from a friend.

There are two apps I have on my iPhone that have long since been removed from the app store. It used to be that as long as you had downloaded them at least once you could find them in your purchases section of the app store app.

Is that not still true? And if not, when did it change?

Both of those removed apps are back on my phone, but even when they weren't they were not on any other devices and were still available in my purchases list.

If they were able to learn one app they’ll be able to learn another. Unfortunately the smart tech industry is extremely fast-moving and if you can’t keep up you’ll be left behind outta luck. This ain’t me being harsh, it’s just the harsh reality of things.

As for password managers, 1Password has been around for years, and I’m sure you could find her a pill reminder app that behaves exactly the same way. Especially if you set it up for her.

I think that is only true in a general sense. Unless your job/profession or needs/interests call for being on the bleeding edge most people function just fine on older software and hardware.

For sure, there's a point where being outdated become a problem, but most people are reasonably current or smart enough to make older stuff work for modern activities.

I'm no longer able to redownload the iFixit app on my phone, I had to sync it from a copy on my Mac.

I have the app on the old phone, but it does not copy to iTunes when I "transfer purchases"
You need to have downloaded the app to iTunes etc. in order to be able to load it on the new phone. Having it downloaded to the old phone and trying to transfer isn't going to work. Read over the link I posted.

It is my understanding, and I could be wrong here, that not all the old purchased apps show anymore.

If a developer pulls an app from the App Store, it's gone for good. No way to re-download it again even using the same OS. CoconutBattery is an example. I have a copy of it on my iPhone running 9.3.5 but it no longer exists in The AppStore. If I deleted it off my phone (never gunna happen) it would be gone for good. No way to get it back. Modern computing, especially iOS, sucks in that regard.
