Hey, im new here and new to mac in general and ive bought an TB3 enclosure called wavelink. Its not the best but also not the worst from what ive read online. So i bought an Samsung 980 Pro because it was dirt cheap (new, so i dont think its the problem of the ssd) and i startet blackmagic disk speed and almost choked my tee.

Specs: M1 Base Air, APFS, 980 Pro 1TB, Wavelink TB3 Enclosure

I have 2700 Write Speed, what is great for an china TB3 enclosure i think but not so great for an 980 Pro but the problem is i only have 10 MB/s read speed. Ive testet with amorphous diskmark and it seems like its not working correct. See my attached screenshots.

Things ive tried:
  • Using second port
  • Format to Mac Extended (write was way worse, read was still 10)
  • Multiple deletion and creation
I also just tried to transfer files from A to B and it seems the benchmark is correct. Write is lightning fast and read is like 15 sek for 3 GB.

Ive tried to find some info on the web but i was not able to find someone with read speeds that slow.
Maybe some of you with more experience has an idea. I can not test it on an intel mac because i dont have none, also dont have an TB on my windows machine.

I'm not sure if it's the same enclosure, but I have a Wavlink NVMe TB3 enclosure with a 1TB Sabrent Rocket inside. My read speeds seem reasonable:

Are you able to test the NVMe drive any other way (not inside the enclosure)? It would be good to rule out an issue with the SSD.

I try to get an USB-C enclosure fast and then i will test it. Thats super weird i have the same device and its also PCIe 4. That was my only explanation. Do you have an M1 mac?

Ive tried the enclosure as ExFat drive on my Dell Latitude and it shows 2600 read. I think the mac has a problem here. Has anybody some knowledge if macos has some settings for thunderbolt ?

I have the wavlink enclosure with a WD Blue SN550 1TB disk. I'm satisfied with the performance for at total price of ≈130€.
Edit: M1 Mac Mini.

Seems like the combination of enclosure, macbook and ssd is the problem. I will change the ssd with my desktop 970 evo. speed should be ok for an external device. i hope that fixes the problem.
