Who would have thought that those who bought a Mac Pro 1,002 days ago would still be current as far as the latest/greatest Mac Pro.

Great buy at the time! :apple:

If you consider a 2009 can be flashed with 2010 firmware, you could call those an even better value and add another year to your day tally.

OTOH, it's kind of pathetic the MP hasn't been updated in 4 years.

Definitely the best bang for the buck I ever bought: my Mac Pro 2009 with Hex 3.33 upgrade and SSD.
I hope to use it at least another 4 years.

Still rockin my MP1.1 which I got as a free exchange from Apple after my G5 died. Technically, I haven't bought a new machine since 2004. Now THAT'S value!

I don't know if I define a machine's value by how many updates there have been since. :p

On the one hand, I wish I'd known more before buying my 2009 with the 3.33GHz quad CPU, Apple RAID card and four HDDs installed, since in hindsight, that wasn't the best value. I was Mac-stupid, and believed that one could not swap CPUs and such, and didn't realize the markup Apple charged for their custom options.

On the other hand, I did unpack and jump right into editing a feature-length movie with absolutely no hassle whatsoever. Eventually, I learned a great deal about modern Apple devices, and have modified all but my 60GB iPod Photo (which I may attempt to modify someday, haha!)

All the while, I'm interested to see what the future brings.

I second that. 2 weeks before my AppleCare ended on my QuadG5 my graphics card fan died. I brought it into Apple and for whatever reason (probably the liquid cooling) they replaced the whole machine and gave me a 2008 MacPro 8x3.2Ghz model. Typing on that machine now. Best deal ever!

OP is correct. Heck of a deal.

For the video, photo, office and gaming work that I do my 4,1 is fine.

In the PC community, on sites with posters I respect, there are lots of guys saying they will skip haswell because their i7-920 still keeps up with non-sli GPU setups just fine.

That really says something.

I'd like a w3680 if I come across a deal, and I may buy a GTX780 (Titan LE) next month - but even my lowly 7870 is working fine and only fails to run Far Cry 3 and Witcher 2 maxed out, so not sure its really worth it.
