"The U.S. Navy's Yorktown "Smart Ship," an Aegis missile cruiser that's being used as a pilot program for computer controlled naval vessels, was left adrift at sea for over two hours earlier this month because of problems with its Windows NT-based software. The ship had to be towed back to harbor for the third time because of database errors.

Officials confirmed that the Yorktown experienced an "engineering local area network casualty,” though they stopped short of blaming Windows NT on the problem. Anthony DiGiorgio, a civilian engineer with the Atlantic Fleet Technical Support Center in Norfolk says that "using Windows NT, which is known to have some failure modes, on a warship is similar to hoping that luck will be in our favor.” DiGiorgio, who is a self-described whistle-blower, says these kinds of problems would be deadly in a combat situation. It was
a) a prototype of sorts of the C&C system. We all know release Apple hardware is essentially in beta form, but problems occur more often in prototypes.

Yeah, I love how that Yorktown story gets more and more dramatic with each year of being told and retold. In a few more years we'll get to hear how it sank and all hands aboard drowned because of a BSOD.

Man, you sure have a lot of bitterness towards Apple. Makes a guy wonder why you spend so much time posting here... I can't see how Apple in any way relate to the old Yorktown canard. The myth and its popularity lies pretty solidly at the feet of the Linux advocacy community. The Yorktown misconception got its running start and was in full bloom years before OS X and way back when Apple were languishing and circling the drain, sure to die at any moment.

Nice touch editing your post after the fact with the addition of the Apple reference in item "a", though.

Yeah - well, I had a further vent. That particular incident was obviously as you say, but I'm referring in general to the current blog-heavy climate, where people who have no business commenting on stuff say so without any need to prove what they're saying, and opinions are influenced more by things which Apple is historically excellent at - image. This was on the up in the late 90's and is at it's nadir now.

As for why I spend so much time posting here - well, I'm one-third vent, one-third advice and one-third commenting. And I do own a good deal more Apple gear than I suspect almost everyone else here. And unlike the "blogosphere", to rate something as high as my shoelaces honestly, I need to own it and be thoroughly familiar with it.

I'm suprised SwissAir let this out.

It's a matter of "image", though you could say that SwissAir allowed a "Windows Air" plane to use their terminal...

I don't see any "Built for Windows" logo on any Mac boxes...
