I've just received the eye-one display 2 screen calibrator from a friend and tried to install the software, however depending on which folders I try to open I get various messages.

If I click Auto Run it says that it can't open as classic environment is no longer supported, and if I click on eye-one folder it says PowerPC applications are no longer supported. A quick google says that I have to go back to an older version of OS X, or buy and older system which are both no go. Are there any other options, or can I just not use this device with my MBP?

FYI It's an early 2012 (non retina) MBP running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5

Cheers

These are your options with this device. It's time to buy a new one, unfortunately.

It's also worth mentioning that the filters inside a colorimeter can fade and shift over time, so replacing it periodically isn't the worst thing.

Thanks again, I wan't aware of that

Check out the colormunki display as an up to date replacement.

+1 to that

Thanks. In the meantime I have found a software update for the eye-one display 2 on the x-rite site so have now managed to use it :)

That device is actually a pretty old one. X-rite continued it when they basically ate Gretag Macbeth. It was really designed late in the CRT era, and doesn't do a very good job with LED backlighting. Macbook pros are a bit limiting in terms of calibration options in general, so I would still try it. Just be aware that the result may not be perfect, even if the software applies a corrective LUT. The filters used in that colorimeter just aren't designed for the same range.

Are you seeing any strange operation with Mavericks and the ColorMunki software? It hasn't been updated in years and last time I used one, on 10.8.5, I was unable to successfully calibrate. I'm wondering if it works better in Mavericks.

I believe there are a few issues with Mavericks. I'm still on Mountain Lion so I can't be sure. But how were you unable to calibrate on 10.8.5? Was there an error message?

Which update?

Snerkler: which piece of software did you update to get the Display2 to work on Mavericks?

I'm not using Mavericks, I'm using Mountain Lion. I'll see if I can dig out where I got it from as it may work on Mavericks.

Solution!

I use iDisplay Calc 2 both on windows and mac snow leopard and mavericks. Forget the official software and use iDispCalc GUI. IMO this software is much better and works on all versions and OSs.

Had an issue on mavericks but this was solved once the latest version of argyll cms engine was installed.

Thanks for posting this. I have a Pantone Huey which is no longer supported, and I had given up on using it. I installed this, and 45 minutes later had a custom profile installed for my 27" iMac.

Sorry I can't remember and have done a quick search and couldn't find it. It was along time ago and have since upgraded to idisplay pro.

With its plastic lens cover some 8 years old (and no doubt discoloured), I'm not sure I'd trust it anyway.
They do t have that plastic cover on the newer i1 Display Pro or ColorMunki Display.
Even with a cover, the dyes for the filters in the old i1 display units have probably shifted enough that calibrations shouldn't be used.
