Your comment above details what I'd call "sunglasses mode" where you can disable Face ID's need to see your eyes for authentication.

It does not address "flat on a table" mode where the sensors are pointed directly at the ceiling and one is sitting at a 90 degree angle to the sensors. I don't see how an iPhone X lying on a conference table is going to see my face from 3 feet away at a very sharp angle. From all I've seen of people using the X both at the keynote and at the postgame events, it has to be held up as if you're taking a selfie.

If you put your phone 3 feet away on a table, how would you read anything on your phone even with Touch ID? Wouldn’t you need to move your eyes closer to the phone in order to do that?

This.

I held out on passcode security for years and only decided to embrace the idea of a locked iPhone because Touch ID was so reliable and so effortless.

Entering a PIN every time I want to unlock the phone was unacceptable before Touch ID and is unacceptable after Touch ID. It is just too inconvenient. I must unlock my phone 50 times a day. No interest in typing in a PIN 50 times a day.

So if I get a X I will have no security at all. Way to go, Apple.
You & many others here don't know what you're on about. You're convinced of something you haven't even used yet. Typical internet extreme & uneducated opinions.

Look, others who know more than us appear to be converting.

Listen, we're all speculating here. From what I've seen on Apple's keynote, Apple's video, and the in-use video's posted by those invited to the iPhone X demo events, Face ID requires the phone to be in a 'selfie position' and that's not how I use my phone a significant amount of time.

So if I wind up purchasing a X and Face ID becomes too annoying, I will simply turn off Face ID and passcode and go back to the old days where I had no lock on my phone. Come to think of it, even Touch ID has been a waste of time these past 4 years. My phone has never been lost, misplaced, or in anyone else's possession other than my own.

Without engaging in a 23 page argument, FaceID is that primary reason I will not be ordering an iPhone X. I like Touch ID too much. On a 7 Plus and will be skipping this upgrade cycle - will re-evaluate next fall.

For me, TouchID has been a good thing.

Will FaceID be just as good?...we will wait and see.

We're concerned if FaceID will be as good as TouchID -- will it be as easy to use? Will we be forced to do things differently?

No one knows right now.

To say that "Others who know more than us are converting" is downright silly. Do you realize how stupid that sounds?

Yes, and the early read based admittedly on limited evidence is that Face ID sucks.

Doesn’t bother me at all, if it really is as secure as they say it is then I’m all for it. Sure sometimes I’d probably need to unlock my phone without looking a thing it, but I can always use my pin. Not as quick, but it works.

Another one incapable of discussing things without putting others down...

Granted, the article may not be 100%, but it hints at changes in the industry relating to experts favouring Face ID.

I'm only passing information on whereas you're passing condescension on.

Please list all the names of these people "that know more" that are converting.

And what does knowing more mean exactly? That their opinion counts more than anyone here?

Who's condescending?

I said we will have to wait and see how well FaceID works in all the many use cases.

The implication was as an alternative to Touch ID, without having to manoeuvre one’s noggin in front of a camera.

However, as it happens, thanks to muscle memory, I actually can pin unlock my phone without looking at it, so thanks.

While I don’t doubt you can do that, after you unlock it you still have to look at it though. The only area it may cost you more time is Apple Pay. I still have to look at my phone to do anything on it so it doesn’t bother me at all

I do agree and as I’ve said many times, I’m all in favour of Face ID.
There will be times when I expect I’ll use the pin instead of Face ID, when I’m debugging apps for instance and my phone is off to the side of me. Sure I could lift it up, or I could move over to it, but it’ll probably be quicker just to pin unlock.

Of course that’ll also depend on just how wide the field of view is for Face ID. But I doubt it’s going to be wide enough to catch my face halfway across the desk when it’s lying flat.

Doesn’t put me off in the least, I can happily live with occasional pin unlocks. I expect in normal day to day use Face ID will be just fine.

Don't Look At It At All:

Apple Pay 5x a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
Boarding Pass presentation at TSA.
Boarding Pass presentation at gate.

Look At It But From An Oft Angle:

Turning on the alarm clock (flat on a table, pointed at ceiling).
Reading a text (flat on a table, pointed at ceiling).
Checking emails (flat on a table, pointed at ceiling).
Change playlists (flat on a table, pointed at ceiling).
Locate point of interest during NAV trip (on vent clip, pointed at rear seat).

There are many more instances where a "selfie orientation" is not required to unlock an iPhone currently and now will be an inconvenience with an iPhone X.

Not to forget, pointing a phone at your face as opposed to using your finger is not more convenient in any use case. If the phone is up at your face it's in your hand first and a second or so earlier. This BS about "more secure" is nonsense. It's just a marketing ploy to make people think the X is so "new".

My boarding pass ends up in my wallet with my credit card and my gas card, how do you pick the card or pass without looking?

I agree with you, I think for the most part face I’d will be fine.

Open the airline's app.
Navigate to the boarding pass so it's in the foreground.
Tap the side button to lock the phone.

Upon unlocking the phone, the boarding pass being the last thing you viewed is in full view. I can do it in one fluid motion from my pocket to the glass scanner, thumb on the home button, it's unlocked and ready for the TSA or gate agent without being pointed anywhere near my face and at waist level.

Well, you are ready for the swipe-your-phone-without-looking Olympics!

But your use case(s) are so far from mine as to be in another universe.

I’m confident it will work, but does anyone remember the first gen TouchID? Usable but hit and miss. I’m sure FaceID will be similar. Now a refined FaceID next year I’m sure will be amazing.

Some people don’t need to be talked out of it, or for that matter, talked into it. Some of us are capable enough of looking at the available options, weighing the pros and cons and coming to an educated decision all by ourselves. Without the need of other people to vindicate our purchases.

For me a big part is the screen, I’m too used to bigger screens now, but there’s times I struggle with the size a bit, won’t bore you with it some people will know why, so the bigger screen in a smaller size will be an absolute godsend.

I don’t care if I have to look at it for it to automatically unlock, the vast majority of the time when I unlock my phone now I’m already looking at it. For the times when I’m not, I’ll work around it easily enough. I don’t really see it being a big problem *for me*.

Not to mention that Face ID apparently has a wide field of vision and if you really want to, you can disable the “attention” aspect of it, so you don’t have to be directly looking at it. Is it going to be as flexible as Touch ID, no probably not. But is it going to be the end of the world and make me stop using my iPhone, eh, no.

I also like that the second camera has OIS on the X, should improve things quite a bit. And as a developer, I can’t wait to play around with the TrueDepth Camera, just for s&g if nothing else.

Not everything hinges on how we unlock our devices for some of us. For some of us it’s just one of the many variables we consider when making our purchase. I’ve tried facial unlock before and I like it, I didn’t like how easy it was to fool it on other devices, but Apple seem to have solved that particular niggle.
