The phone is smaller than the Plus, but the screen is about the same size. You know, that whole “bezel-less” thing?
Incorrect, the edges are smaller and the top section cannot be used for other than what Apple has them setup for.. meaning it's basically a small bezel on the top. The usable portion of the screen is a little larger than the iPhone 6/7/8 but not the same as the Plus series, it's smaller by a lot.

How do you propose to read the email without looking at the screen? If you can see the phone, it can see you.

When my iPhone is flat on a conference table, it's pointed straight at the ceiling and my face is at a 90 degree angle to it. Launch your rear facing camera, lie it on a table. Now creep your face into the shot. You'll be about 6 inches away by the time you can see your forehead. From what I've seen of other facial recognition smartphones, you need to align your eyes very close to dead center. It just won't work lying flat on a table.

If the Face ID sensors have a wide enough field of view to get a clear look at my face from 2 feet away sitting at a 90 degree angle then surely it will have a clear look at other faces in the seats adjacent to me.

Why does it seem people are forgetting that this is still an option?

I didn't forget.

But my passcode contains numbers, letters and symbols. (Yeah, I like security.)

Why enter that manually when TouchID exists?

"Oh, you say that TouchID isn't available on the ipX?"

"Well, who decided that?"

"Apple."

Complete FAIL!

Because it's a step backwards if you have to do it regularly

This.

I held out on passcode security for years and only decided to embrace the idea of a locked iPhone because Touch ID was so reliable and so effortless.

Entering a PIN every time I want to unlock the phone was unacceptable before Touch ID and is unacceptable after Touch ID. It is just too inconvenient. I must unlock my phone 50 times a day. No interest in typing in a PIN 50 times a day.

So if I get a X I will have no security at all. Way to go, Apple.

you won't really know until it's out and in real world use.. A multi millionaire like yourself should be able to just buy one try it out, and if it doesnt work for you throw it in a drawer or give it away to a friend or family member.

Actually, the ipX promises to be very secure.

According to Apple, TouchID is about 1:50,000 that the same FP keys are shared by two people.

In comparison, FaceID is 1:1,000,000

So FaceID is much better in that regard by several orders of magnitude..

FP scanning is acceptable for me. Or more precisely said...the risks are acceptable.

If a thief wants to try to match someone's FP to mine, go right ahead.

What's not acceptable is Apple deciding to drop TouchID in the new phone. Not before proving FaceID will be just as convenient (and as error-free) as TouchID under the myriad of possible use cases.

With Face ID to wake the phone lying flat on the desk I need to use my whole hand to grip the phone and hit the side button with my thumb. If I then want to unlock it I need to pick it up and point it at my face.

Or you could just tap the OLED screen to wake the phone. FaceID works when the iPhone is laying flat on a surface. You just have to make eye contact with the phone. You can also turn off the attention-awareness setting so you don't have to look directly at the phone for FaceID to work.

With Face ID it takes twice as long to double click buttons, raise the phone to my face, etc.

The iPhone X screen will also activate when held to an NFC terminal and FaceID works at an angle too.

I have been struggling to decide between the X and 8+ since the Keynote. Losing TouchID for FaceID is not necessarily a deal breaker, but it's definitely one of the factors that makes me lean towards the 8+.

We don't know what angle the Face ID won't work at so these types of claims shouldn't be made. As we saw in the demo after a few failed face attempts you'll need to use your passcode. If all you need is eye contact then you're gonna have problems of people looking at the phone causing it to lock up. Face ID has its practical shortcomings that shouldn't be ignored.

Why would anyone ever "want" this feature? This is more of a we did it, and you WILL adapt thing.

Your wife isn't a "conspiracy theorist" considering this was all proven recently they are doing this to us.
hmmm. ok.. tape up your laptop and phone then. Just leave mine alone

No Touch ID = no buy. Went from 7+ to 8+. At least I have most of the features iPhone X would have. I think X will only have a better front camera, screen and "ani-emojis" over the 8+. Those I can live.

I'll wait for Xs.

Also, have you considered an Apple Watch? It’s brilliant even if all you use is the notifications. Completely reduced my need to be staring at my phone all the time and no one really catches on that you’re triaging emails or replying to texts. The scribble thing actually works and you can have custom replies preset that usually work 80% of the time.

I can discretely be notified of messages (and baseball scores) during boring faculty meetings without digging out my phone.

More importantly, I can be notified of things I need to know while teaching class even when I've asked students to "put your devices away." Just a glance at my wrist.

I love my Apple Watch for so many reasons--this is just a small part of its usefulness for me.

All the cases you posted are valid concerns.

At best, FaceID will require little more than an additional 1 second delay to do its work. But it may prove that FaceID will impose more of an imposition than TouchID to unlock your phone.

We don't know.

But I believe Apple blundered by choosing not to support TouchID in the ipX.

As I said countless times before...TouchID is a proven and convenient means to unlock your phone.

It was irresponsible of Apple to not include it. We don't know if TouchID will be replaced by FaceID at some point in the future.

ipX users are beta testers of this new technology.

I don't beta test. End of story.

These posts are HILARIOUS to me.

It’s so true that people don’t like change. At all. So much so that they invent reasons to dislike something new. TouchID is proven - therefore anything else is not worth it? How will we ever advance as a species if we live in the past? TouchID is the past, now. Welcome to the future.

Best part of your post, though? One less person to fight on the Internets to get my iPhone X preorder in on October 27.

Agreed, but it's not about money. It's about time. I don't want to lose the next 2 months when I could be happy in an iPhone 8 and at the same time I don't want to be unhappy when others have their X's and I have an old-design iPhone 8. I'd like to make a strong decision this week and not look back with regret either way.

I'm 90% sure I will eschew the X but it's only because of Face ID and so if I can get at some nuances and details about how it functions in the real world that will put my mind at ease about its theoretical shortcomings and perhaps put me back in the X camp.

All valid points but I have no real concern here. I'm ready to embrace the future.

I don’t want faceID because touchID is better (plus it requires a deliberate act on my part to unlock - i need to use one of the correct fingers, and I can easily make it not work if i want to by using the wrong part of my finger - this is a feature).

I'm fine with introducing new technology.

But I do have a problem when existing and proven current technology is abandoned for the new technology in the inaugural product.

That is what we have here with the ipX.

To say otherwise, would be untrue.

Perhaps someone can answer this for me. How do I keep my bat **** crazy girlfriend from unlocking my iPhone X while I'm sleeping? I normally sleep on my back. Sometimes on my side. All she'll have to do is aim the phone at my face right? Guess I could sleep on my face. Probably would be hard to breath though. Lock the actual phone away perhaps. Kick my girlfriend to the curb. Guess I'll figure something out. Suggestions are welcome.

FaceID is one of the few things preventing me from purchasing the iPhone X as well, in addition to price. I just wanted a fluid motion with facial detection instantaneously opening up a phone after the power button is pressed. However, that didn't happen and I not in the market for the X now.
But that's exactly how it works, per Craig.

Gaze detection. If your eyes aren't looking at the screen she's not getting in. Craig specifically addressed this on John Gruber's podcast.

Easy... assuming the click SOS feature is still active on X.. just click the side button 5 times. Then set the phone down. She'll be forced to use the lock screen keycode instead of Face ID. It is the same as someone shutting down fully and rebooting the device, FACE ID does not work until after the first time you log in with keycode.
