Hello all,
My new iPhone 14 Pro Max Face ID does not unlock all the time (I'd say 90-95%). My previous iPhone 11 was much better (>99%). Is it just me?
- When testing continuously the phone unlocks every time, so my face has been registered well
- After moving around with the phone with the screen locked, sometimes it will not unlock at the first attempt or even at the second attempt. Then I need to unlock using password.

I'm not using the 14PM differently compared to my previous iPhone 11, which I passed on to my kid and for which I still have my face configured and it unlocks every time.

iOS 16.1.1
Face mask disabled
Require Attention disabled
Attention Aware features enabled
Mous screen protector - all transparent, no privacy features

Do you have similar experience?

I think something else is going on. While I walk around with the phone in my hand (facing downward or sideways) I regularly get haptic feedback similar to when Face ID fails to recognise my registered face, even though I’m not even looking at the phone. I think Face ID allows for a couple of attempts to try and read the face before it locks up and requires the passcode.
So I think the real issue here is that while walking around, the phone assumes I’m looking at the screen to unlock where in reality I have the phone at arms length facing down or sideways.

This is why I can never leave TID and returned my XR after 8 hours of use. FID was a bad experience for me.

This just has to be software related, the OS apparently thinks it sees a face trying to unlock even while it’s faced downward.

I went from a 11 (ending with iOS 16.1) to a 14 pro (iOS 16.1 and 16.1.1).
Face ID worked the same on both, with no issues. It’s not supposed to be any different.

The fact that you say you have more issues when moving around makes me question your front-facing camera. When you take pictures with it, is it clear or blurry?
I would take your phone in to Apple.

Front camera is 100% clear and functioning very well. Im just outside my return period and the phone is very usable so I’ll just wait a bit. If the issue persists I will take it to apple. Thanks all for our input.

Well re-enable “require attention”
