At first I completed Face ID set-up indoors with not so great lighting, and was getting mixed results. It would especially fail with sunglasses.

I have since reset Face ID and then completed the set-up again, but outdoors with better lighting (not in direct sunlight) and I've experienced a dramatic increase in reliability. It has not failed once in the past 24 hours, and works perfectly with my polarized ray bans.

Hope this helps anyone else that may be having issues.

Same here!

I set my Face ID initially in a perfectly lit office environment very close to my iPhone, but then it didn’t recognize me in the car or with sunglasses on.

I redid Face ID under bad lighting and as far away from the phone as I could while still having it register and now it recognizes perfectly. Even better than Touch ID which wouldn’t unlock with sweaty hands!

I've never had an issue with sweaty hands....I'm not sure my hands sweat.....I did use my finger to unlock my phone. If you were using your sweaty palm to unlock your phone, I believe you were not unlocking correctly.

Edit:
I'm kidding of course :)

How does the lighting affect setup? I was under the impression that the dot projector is infrared light. Does artificial light affect this somehow?

I did mine in a room that was dim and held it close to my face because that’s how I normally hold it when I wake up during the middle of the night and I want to look at my phone and I’ve had no issues with it not recognizing me whether I hold it far away, very close or in a dark room.

Main thing that pisses me off is that it doesn’t work with my ray-bans on.

Its due to the lens being opaque and the sensors/camera can’t read your eye’s. You can disable attention awareness and it will unlock your iPhone then.
