I use a CPAP machine and mask to help me sleep. With Touch ID I could just pick up my phone and unlock it without having to take my mask off.

Now, I can't do that on my X because of Face ID. It's not a big deal to just punch in the PIN. However, since the Xs Max will be able to recognize two faces I am hoping Face ID will recognize me with and without the CPAP mask.

Anybody else dealing with this?

A lot of the times when you're in bed anyway FaceID fails because you're squinting because of the brightness of the screen or if you usually wear corrective eyewear.

It shouldn't be too difficult to overcome once you get used to FaceID, is my experience.

Best of luck to you with what you choose.

CPAP here. X doesn't unlock when mask (full face mask) is on. Haven't tried setting up a second face with the mask on. That would be cool if it worked.

Tried just now. It just says "Face Obstructed" and to remove anything blocking my face to continue. I don't see that changing with the Xs since as far as I know it's just faster-- not changing anything with how Face ID actually works.

iOS 12 has an 'Alternate Appearance' feature to Face ID so you can now unlock your phone with CPAP mask on but of course you have to register your face with the cpap mask first.

Wow, that's great news! I already like Face ID a great deal, but this would take care of the one pet peeve I have.

Oh, happy day!

i do not believe this will work even in iOS12. CPAP mask obstructs unique facial features that the software is searching for (distances from the tip of the nose to the edge of the eye for instance).

For these borderline cases, unfortunately, touchID is still better. I have similar problems with FaceID when wearing a surgical mask.

Yep, you're right. I tried it last night and it didn't work. Too bad, I was really hoping that it would work, however I understand why.

Oh well, first world problems!

Adding a second face ID wile wearing my cpap mask is working for me on my iPad Pro 12.9”
However I use a rather small cpap nasal pillow mask.

I have no problem with face ID and my mask but I also use the smaller nasal pillows, not the full on Bane mask.

I scanned my face without CPAP and then scanned with CPAP on. Works flawlessly on my XS Max, even if I'm laying on my side and back, with and without reading glasses. Thank God Apple added 2 scans, always annoyed me when I couldn't do this when I had the X.

I have iPhone 11 Pro with iOS 13.2.2 and tried registering with my CPAP first but it’s not working. It’s telling me to remove any facial obstructions. I’ve got ResMed Mirage FX nose mask. Let me know what iPhone and mask you’re using that works. Thanks.

I use the Mirage FX mask also. My iPhone X facial recognition, with iOS 13.2.2, works with the CPAP mask on. I registered it as my second face ID at night in the dark. No issues.

Consider yourself lucky. I’ve tried first and second. Just keeps telling me to remove facial obstruction. I’ve also tried with and without the hose attached to mask. :0(

I had to use alternate appearance mode for when I have my glasses on. The only issue with this is the security of Face ID is greatly reduced.

Aside from my regular glasses, I have light filter glasses which look a lot like the cardboard 3D glasses of movie theater fame. I was rather shocked that while wearing these cardboard atrocities that my iPhone 11 still unlocked.
