Face Recognition is bad idea (Face ID?)

TouchID had its own problem. One can simply take the phone while ur sleeping and use your finger to unlock the device.

FaceID is worse. One can simply take the phone away from you and flash your face to the phone and boom. Phone is unlocked.

Yeah I know, it may not be fast enough to recognize your face, but there will most likely be possible situations where this will definitely work.

I'm not a usual naysayer but I'm very concerned that I may need to use pass-code again...
 
In the leaked home pod firmware a auto lock feature was mentioned. Maybe it will lock itself if it can't recognize you and ask for a passcode.

It's sad to see Touch ID go. But if this work better and faster and is more secure (more data inputs) than I'm all for it replacing Touch ID. But only if it works from from different angles, in example laying flat on a table which was also rumored. If I have to pick it up and stare straight into it then that will get annoying real quick.

I imagine it'll require that your eyes be open. Or at least not actively closed (ie. so you could use it with sunglasses on, but not if your eyes were actually closed).

I don't like the idea of having my face willingly stored. TouchID is fine. LEAVE IT APPLE. I will wait as long as possible to upgrade if facial recognition is required.
 
I guess it's gonna be iPhone 7S for people who wants touch id and the iPhone 8 for people who wants face id... Personally i love touch id better i still hope the iphone 8 comes with touch id sensor
 
Isn't it obvious, that FACE ID will require you to make facial gestures, instead of just one straight face.

This way it can't be tricked with a photo.

Yeah I can‘t wait to put on a forced smile or wink at my phone in public. If it requires anything other than looking at the screen the technology will most likely receive insane amount of backlash.

As much as Apple values security, I'm confident enough research went into this where we need to allow it to be demoed first, and see what capabilities and features it has for enhanced security.

Think in this. Apple Pay works on Apple Watch without Touch ID. Just with the grant of the wrist detection. If the watch is unlocked the watch is on our wrist so we are authenticated, and we can pay just with a touch on the watch.

If the FaceID is so fast, so reliable, so secure, and so so good, imagine that we can move the phone to the TPV, and before we even think in touch our Iphone the FaceID already detected our face and the Apple Pay could authenticate us. I don’t know how good could be the FaceID because it should detect if the iPhone is hold by us and not by other person (a possible thief) while we are close to him....

I trust apple can surprise us with a wonderful tool. Give them a breath!

P.D. About movements eyes avoiding trick with a picture, I think it is as easy as requiring a eyes blinking.
 
I think it will be really interesting to see how the courts handle the legality of Face ID in criminal cases, etc. There was the whole issue of whether the 5th amendment protection against self-incrimination was violated by forcing users to unlock a phone with their fingerprint (Result: Courts ruled that prints weren't protected by the 5th Amd. but passcodes were). Will Face ID simply allow the police to lay the person's phone in sight of a person and have it unlock? Probably.

There was also the issue with dead people / chopped off fingers, and getting their prints to unlock a device when Touch ID needed a conductive charge / RF frequency .... aka the person to be alive with their fingers attached for it to work (aka the old fear that thieves would cut off a person's finger and use it to unlock their phone). Not saying Apple shouldn't allow a dead person's face to unlock a device, but I know the Microsoft Kinect 2 can detect the heartbeat through the temporal artery and measure the body temp. of a person through its IR sensors and it's using tech from 2013, so its possible Apple could prevent the "let's hold this up to a wax figure at Madame Tussaud's to unlock the artist-formerly-known-as-Prince's iPhone" issue by looking for a pulse in the user's face.

If the objective of PEARL (the facial recognition) is for user autentication (which we still don’t know), the most probable is that the phone will only be unlocked while It detects your face.

If somebody turns the iphone to the owner face to unlock it and then turns the iPhone to their face to use it without consent, It will get locked again and will promp him to insert the password.

Anyways It is also possible that PEARL is used to unlock the Iphone and Touch ID is still implemented for Apple Pay and App downloads.

We still don’t know...but I don’t understand how can people think that Apple is made of a bunch of idiots that would implement a new autentication method If It wasn’t better than the alternative.
Every problem that we can think of has already been worked out for sure otherwise It wouldn’t be implemented.

maybe we should wait & see how this works before panicking... IF it happens. and there will always be an alternative (ie using a passcode).
 
The new iPhone is also rumored to have 3D scanning capabilities. I am sure it will be able to recognize a picture vs an actual face object
