This is rather interesting and worrying. Let's say you have Facebook and have nothing synced to Facebook on your smartphone or computer. A friend of yours buys a new iPhone 5 and turns off all access to contacts for Facebook. The name used for Facebook is not related and the email address is an email for applications. Upon setting up Facebook the Facebook application starts asking you whom you would like to add by recommending and suggesting possible on tracts that you may know. The scary part is that all the contacts that are in your contacts list of which have a Facebook account are suggested to you. This means that Facebook actually has access to your contacts whether you allow them access in the privacy settings or not:eek: The privacy setting pretty much mean nothing at all on the iPhone 5.

I think it is about time smartphone manufacturers start manufacturing smartphones with heavily encrypted smartphones which come with two flash drives built in them. One for various applications of which we will call flash B and one for all the personal information of which we will call flash A. All the personal stuff such as call logs,SMS messages,emails,contacts and pictures go on Flash A and all the downloaded applications go onto Flash B. this way things are kept separate and insure privacy of end users with smartphones.

You know you can tell the Facebook app not to acces your contacts, right?

Try and see for yourself;) You supposedly can tell the Facebook app not to access your contacts. If you have a Facebook account then get a new iPod touch,iPhone,or Ipad and install Facebook on it. If the other device has your name,telephone number and email address on it then you will see that Facebook will ask you if you know any of the following people and wish to add them to your friends list :eek: You could have everything switched off and have that other person open a new Facebook account on a new device just to check and see for yourself. I tried it on 3 new devices and all devices the names of all contacts in the contacts list which had a Facebook account popped up in the Facebook application asking you if know them or would like to add them.

So much for that option to not allow access.

Settings -> Facebook -> Contacts -> Off.

The obvious was done which was why I posted this. If Facebook was not able to read your contacts they would not be able to suggest friends to you ;)

See above. You can try it as well. Get a new iTouch 5 with about 100 contacts in there along with their emails and telephone numbers. 40-50 of those contacts in your contacts list should have Facebook. You turn everything off and then open up a new Facebook account and open it on your iTouch 5. All those friends of yours should also have your telephone numbers and emails on their devices. See how many familiar friends pop up on Facebook upon setting up your new Facebook profile asking you if you know any of these people. You will find that the majority of those people in your contacts list will pop on Facebook asking you if you know them and would like to add them to your friends list.

I would not have started this thread if this was not happening. I know you can go to Settings -> Facebook -> Contacts -> Off and those were all off.
