Why the heck is the Facebook app now occupying almost 1GB of RAM? I thought it was a cloud based app. How to clean up this mess?

It does a lot of caching. You can uninstall / re-install to clear it out or just use the mobile site in Safari.

I'm assuming you mean storage rather than RAM (which is memory used for things that are running). Most of that space is basically cached content that gathers over time that you use the app. Best way to get rid of it is to delete the Facebook app and install it again.
