Yeah they're links to pics on Dropbox. My employer normally blocks them as well.
I experimented a little more with iPhoto and here's my observations:
- I can't figure out how to add an album to it. UPDATE: yes I can. As I suspected, you do it through the Photos app. See below.
- Each time you launch iPhoto, it "updates" its "library" by effectively pulling in (syncing, so to speak) its own copies of photos -- and associated albums -- from the Photos app. This means photos are effectively duplicated. (And this makes sense given the "sandbox" nature of iOS apps.)
- If you delete a photo, or album, in Photos, it's also removed in iPhoto (i.e. the next time you open iPhoto and it updates its library). Likewise for adding a photo or album -- it's added to the camera roll, and sucked into the iPhoto app the next time you run iPhoto. You are not going to eliminate the need for Photos app, unfortunately.
- If you delete a photo from iPhoto, it is not deleted from the Photo app (camera roll). The original remains intact; iPhoto simply pretends it doesn't exist any more. I can't see a way to "undelete" them in iPhoto yet. There's potential for confusion here if you have lots of photos and do lots of deletions in iPhoto. If, after doing those deletions, one hops into the Photos app and makes a bunch of albums that contain those photos (remember: deletions in iPhoto do not affect the photos in camera roll), then the next time iPhoto is launched those albums will contains less pics than they do in Photos because, again, iPhoto has "forgotten" about those pics when they were deleted in iPhoto. Better off doing deletions in the Photos app since these are reflected in iPhoto as well.
- Confusing? Somewhat, but it's a product of the fact that Photos and iPhoto have their own copies of the photo data and the "synchronizing" of this data only happens in one direction (i.e. iPhoto synchronizes its photo data w/ changes in the camera roll, but the Photos app does not know anything at all about the photo data iPhoto has).
Hopefully this makes at least some sense.
