Facebook is the new imessage..well for me

Facebook messenger I mean


I use imessage with my mate and sister but the person who I text a lot and the only person who I text a lot is my girlfriend and she is on a Samsung phone. We were using whatsapp until recently but have now decided to start texting via facebook messenger as I miss having that abilty to text her on my ipad and macbook pro.



Me having an apple watch means I can also check texts on my watch with the dock by having messenger in there. I have also downloaded an app for messenger on my macbook pro so I am now able to text and view texts from her on my iphone, ipad, macbook and apple watch all while she doesn’t even have an iphone.


So really If I was on android I wouldn’t miss imessage due to texting her on messenger anyway.


Just a random thought for me to post given the importance of imessage for some folks. I can still see when she is typing and when a text has been read so really texting on messenger to me is like imessage.

I feel the same way. As I said in other thread: just about everyone I know has fb, but only half at best have iPhones.

BUT, expect a lot of FB messenger hate coming your way. Some people don't even know why they have the hate, but they still spew it.

Yeah. Smileys matter! FB emoticons are horrid. Whatsapp uses the iPhone set which I think are the best. Whatsapp is brilliant IMO.

It's probably the best option for a cloud backed fully featured messaging program that is about as ubiquitous as iMessage.

It is just a shame you can't use whatsapp via ipad where notifications come through the same way

Every messaging system is about the same if you want to do the basic. The only exception is iMessage which is the worst (the only in the world that has a auto membership rejection built-in).

The best one in term of use cases is probably WeChat. The way this one integrates messaging+commerce+payment is quite mind boggling. Buy something, send a message and payment done. Can be used anywhere from your local convenience to online shopping. You can leave your wallet/credit cards/Apple Pay/Samsung Pay at home. But only in China (where WeChat has 750 million active users)

WhatsApp is 2nd best after iMessage and I don't use Facebook and many of the people I iMessage with don't use fb either. Clearly the last few updates to whatsapp were very innovative, but my use case with WhatsApp is very limited. I use iMessage and sms primarily.

Any group chats I have with my friends is through WhatsApp. It's pretty seamless.

Although a big group chat i have with my wife and our friends and SO's is done via MMS and it's a **** show since there is a mix between Android and iPhones in the group.

Facebook messenger is my 2nd used text app behind imessage.

But imessage is still used around 90% of the time. Just about all the people I frequent with have IOS so imessage is our choice and works great.

This is a very personal matter, imessage is a must for some and an afterthought for others.

you can use whatsapp with you macbook too.


1. skype: iphone, ipad, android phone, android tablet, android tv box, windows, macbook

2. whatsapp: iphone, macbook, windows

3. sms: iphone, with people who have smartphones but use them as a wired phone...

i've actually moved back to WhatsApp now as messenger seemed to be a data hog. love using WhatsApp on my MacBook just a shame there is nothing for the iPad so it all syncs together

yeah.

i thought you might be able to sync it via iPad so you get the messages come through like iMessage but doesn't seem like it does.

I have faith they're coming and most of the people I talk to only use their phones. Remember that the web version is coming in a month or two. Can't see tablet apps taking much longer than that, even if it's a wrapper.

Edit: As for the question? I think it uses data from whatever cap you have just like WhatsApp.

Once you realize the company is Google, the ones who roll things out in the least logical way, it will all make sense.

meh. i use both. imessage is great because it is transparent. i dont need someone on facebook to make use of it. if we both have iphones, it just works.

I have zero reliance on iMessage anyway, mainly because I am using WeChat, QQ and WhatsApp for my communication need. Therefore, I have zero reliance with iOS. I can switch platform back and forth if I wish. Being not tied to certain OS is great.

Yeah, like it or not, Facebook is becoming the "lowest" common denominator. Even "better," it can be accessed by any device at any time, with the same account, simultaneously. But it's Facebook...

If you are looking for a messaging service that offers that kind of flexibility (but not a social network), try Telegram. It has clients for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, web, etc, and it works seamlessly. The catch is getting your friends and families to use it.
