So I was at Best Buy today and I was using Safari to login to my facebook account because I wanted to see if I would be able to chat like I could on a normal computer. I was sad to see that the chat function was not loading in Safari when I loaded the page. All other features were working.

When I asked one of the employees if the chat function worked somehow in the browser while logged in, she said that I would need to go into the facebook app to be able to chat.

That stinks. The facebook app isn't that great. Why doesn't the chat feature work in the browser like a regular computer? If I could get that to work, I think I would pick up the iPad.

Thoughts?

Facebook chat sucks on Mac or PC too. So even if the iPad Safari copes with it, it'll still suck.

I guess my concern is I don't want to be logged into my facebook account when someone is trying to chat with me and not have it come through.

Despite that, so many people use the feature. So there is no way for me to accept chats when using the iPad through Safari? Bummer.

Just download one of the chat clients that support Jabber and Push notifications.

Then you won't even need to go to Facebook to do Facebook chat.

The facebook app supports chat and works fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt that you are showing up as Available to Chat to other people when you are using Facebook in Safari on the iPad. So you shouldn't have to worry about other people sending you a message and not getting through.

As the others pointed out, you can use the iPhone Facebook app for now until they release an official Facebook app for iPad. OR you can use an instant messaging client that uses Facebook as one of its services.

UGH! People that want to chat with me on Facebook are so annoying. Leave me alone!!! :p

I turn it off so no one knows I am online.

I guess if are worried about ignoring others you can turn it off as well, but if you like the chat feature I don't have any other advice. Sorry.

Okay, so that isn't too bad. It is good to know that there are some chat clients out there that can help out with this. I might try that out. Still debating on whether or not to get an iPad. I definitely like them.

Anyway, thanks for the responses all.
