I apologize if I'm beating a dead horse here, but wth is going on with the Facebook and Twitter apps?

I have Background App Refresh disabled for both, yet without fail, they eat up large percentages of my battery with excessive background time in the Battery menu. The only fix is to swipe them away from the multitasking screen every time I use one of them.

Is this related to Twitter somehow now muting the Music app every time I open it, regardless of whether there are any multimedia-related tweets in my feed?

I removed Facebook and Facebook Messenger off my 6S Plus and the standby time more than doubled from 24 hours to 50 hours plus.

According to reddit Facebook uses VOIP to keep the application alive no matter what and disabling background refresh has zero impact and can in fact make matters worse.

Twitter is getting steadily worse as well.

Removing Facebook Messenger is pointless as it doesn't hog your battery life...
I never used Twitter so I can't speak for that, but the Facebook main app = NEVER USE. EVER.

For some Facebook Messenger can in fact be responsible for a good amount of battery usage, often enough from background usage.

Then turn off Background App refresh for it? Because I monitor my battery usage daily, FB Messenger most of the time only takes 2% of my battery. And I spend at least 10-20 minutes per day on it. But of course if you spend on it longer, just like any other app the percentage increases.

Backround refresh is simply one smaller aspect of how an app can at times do some tasks in the background, it doesn't control the actual built-in native background functionality made available by the OS itself that various apps can make use of (some more than others, some for valid/desirable and some for not so valid/desirable purposes).

Of course things differ for everyone. For as many people as there are that have high usage with Facebook, also often related to background usage, there are others (like me for example) thst have and use the Facebook app and don't see anything like that (aside from occasional times when the app actually gets used a lot, in which case it's more or less expected in those situations).

For me facebook would use around 8% of my battery over a period of 24 hours and messenger would use about the same before the battery was pretty much dead however when I took these apps off the standby time went up to 50 hours plus so to me it seems that facebook/messenger are keeping a constant connection open in the background outside of the iOS background services.

VOIP was mentioned by quite a few more knowledgeable chaps as a way that facebook makes sure it's app runs continuously even if you close it or turn off background tasks for it.

If the above VOIP statement is true then Facebook should really re-write their app to adhere to iOS guidelines and not run in the back ground if a end user wishes so.

Unfortunately this doesn't work. The only way to eliminate the "background" drain is to swipe the app away from the multi-tasking screen after every use. Otherwise, without fail, Facebook is my #1 battery drain, often with 20%+ of my battery usage, and the vast majority of that being in the background.

I'm referring to the Facebook app and not Facebook Messenger.
