FaceID on my iPhone 13 Pro Max has been inconsistent the last few days. It will work for a couple hours flawlessly. Then, it won't for a couple hours.

Has anyone ever encountered this? Were you able to fix it? If so, how?

Thank you!

Have you tried a soft reset or shutdown and restart of the device? If you have and it still happens you'll need to try to restore it using iTunes/Finder to see if it clears it up. After that I'd say a trip to Apple for diagnosing is in order. You could also wait till 16.3 is released to see if it helps

I’d certainly not do anything as cumbersome as a full restore until after 16.3. But resetting Face ID certainly wouldn’t hurt. Follow this article, if you get down to step 8 without solving it that’s the reset.

I'm having the same issue. FaceID stopped working all together on my 13 Pro Max. I spent time on chat with Apple support who took me through all manner of resets (network reset, settings reset etc). Multiple reboots and a reset of FaceID. Nothing worked - when you go to set-up FaceID the camera fails to recognise a face. I've been told I need to make a service appointment at a store, but the phone is 2 months outside of it's 12 month warranty so assume they will try to charge.

I then installed iOS 16.3. Didn't work initially then an hour or two later I got the prompt to set-up FaceID, went through the process and it started working again. All fine for the rest of the day. Next morning: stopped working again. Later in the day: started working again. Today: not working.

Turns out my sister-in-law has been having a similar issue on her iPhone 12 Pro for the past few days too.

Really annoying - particularly after resetting FaceID and having to set-up Apple Pay all over again only for that not to work.

Feels like a software glitch of some kind.

This is an ios 16 software problem. Even ios 16.3 also still has this problem. It freezes on lock screen and hard reset volume power remains

Oh ok. I guess Apple Support don't know about this or aren't admitting it. Since my previous post, FaceID now works intermittently at different times of the day, but most often not. No issue with my iPad Pro so it's not my face that's the problem :D

I already found a patch how to fix the hanging
lock screen:
1:)turn off all background apps
2:) turn off automatic appstore updates
3:)disable 4 or 5 finger gestures
4:)turn off screen transparency
- settings - accessibility - traffic - tick reduce traffic

In my case, now it works stably, it doesn't hang on the lock screen and what's good is that it runs faster ipados 16.3

Unfortunately, the error still occurs
in ios 16.4 beta 1.
If I set the unlock time to 1 hour or immediately. The lock screen freezes about every 20 hours.
If I set the lock screen to 4 hours,
Lock screen touch suspension occurs every 4 days
I re-sent this error to apple
to finally fix it.
It is something unprecedented that such a serious error occurred from June 2022 to February 2023.

I have the same problem, if under warranty it is recommended to take it to a mobile phone store for repair
