Other Faceid rubbish or Broken iPhone

ok. So I have a beard.

I’ve gone from a iPhone X where Ive never had a single problem with unlocking my phone with my face.

Got the. XS Max yesterday. Took me about an hour to set up faceid as the phone wouldn’t recognise my face.

Got it set up in the end, but my phone wouldn’t unlock had the keep entering my code.

Set up Face ID again. Took half hour, same issue won’t recognise my face.

Set up again, same issue.

It will unlock once every 20/30 times. But it’s clearly faulty. Anyone else having this issue??
 
Face ID was always pretty meh. absolutely never works in any kind of low lighting situation and most times I’m not at an angle where it will work anyway. Passcode is still king in my humble opinion.

Also are you Rorschach from Watchmen? That would also be a reason why it wouldn’t work.

I’ve never had a single issue with it on the X. I’ve even considered shaving my beard. But then thought, no, it was working great on the X the day before.

Should I take it to the apple store?

I would, specifically you have 14 days and they can just issue a new device if you’re experiencing this many issues.

Coming from an 8 Plus to a Max I was worried about FaceID, which is why I skipped the X last year. However I was pleased that FaceID worked flawlessly in the dark at 6am this morning when I woke up and needed a pee. Test passed.

You peed on your phone?

Anyway, coming from a X Face ID is much faster, accuracy seems the same which always was pretty much 100%.

I'd say faulty, sorry. I've gone from a X to a XS Max and it's faster and, so far, 100% accurate.

I was also hesitant about Face ID last year and chose 8+ instead and was pleased with my decision. I was even steering that way this time around but gave it a shot and was very pleased. From making purchases at vending machines to uses in the dark, it’s been reliable. One instance when I had it docked on my nightstand facing me it kept waking the screen. I just repositioned it and that was that. Seems much more practical to use than I had ever considered

FaceID does not depend on ambient lighting what so ever. It should work in a dark closet.

I do not know but the FaceID depends on the “dot projector” and not ambient light. Go into a closet and see, FaceID will work just fine.

I also say it must be faulty as my MAX FaceID works better than my X and it worked perfectly. The MAX seems to work even at angles the X could not.

I’m having issues with new xs max. It doesn’t work in the dark. Doesn’t work with my glasses on in the dark. Only time it works is in bright light. I’ve only been using it for an hour last night and this morning.

It worked when i set it up as brand new phone. But when i restored it as a backup. That’s when the Face ID issues arise.
 
Shame, maybe try a replacement. I've been using it with glasses and it's ridiculously fast. Like instant fast. Way faster than the X and the X is pretty decent.

Max is far from perfect but they've done a solid job on Face ID I reckon. Then again, maybe that's just for some types of faces/features. Maybe it's woeful at beards.
 
I have glasses and a beard and it’s very fast. Faster than I expected considering how people talked about the X being slow last year. It has yet to fail and I haven’t missed Touch ID from my 8+ (which I got in part because I didn’t want to give up Touch ID).

If it took you that long to set up, there has to be a problem with the device.

Ok. So I restored from backup of my X and somone else on this thread has done the same thing and had issues.

Possible cause??
I can’t remember if you set up Face ID before or after you start the restore. I’m sure it was before.

Works perfect for me even in the dark.

Hmmm. I can’t imagine it’s an issue with the backup because Face ID information isn’t saved there. But...maybe delete the profiles on your X, back up the X, then restore your XS from that backup just in case?
 
Slight update.
Thought I would check the camera in selfie mode to see if that’s the problem And noticed the focus box on the screen is constantly trying to focus in the top left hand corner. Just constantly dragging itself up there.

Bit like when we had mice with balls in them and dirt meant it was constantly moving the mouse pointer when you weren’t even touching it. (Showing my age).

Second Face ID phone. At night with nightstand light on never works. Get up middle of night never works. Pretty consistent to me not working in low light. Also random fails during the day I’ve been underwhelmed.

I’m open to any suggestions

I have the max too and I have no issue. It's actually fast and sometimes it doesn't work, but I set up the face ID lazy and jumped around when I set it up, so when I have some time I'll put a few more better scans and hopefully it will work better.
