Does anyone know how FaceID works with apps that currently use TouchID for authentication? Will it "just work"? Or will developers have to add the functionality in which case I'll have to go back to manually entering my password until they get around to it?

They will just work. Developers support biometrics they don’t specify the actual type.
Thanks for the clarification. Does that mean the label and setting for TouchID in most apps will remain the same and it will just be activated by FaceID?

The label will stay as TouchID unless developers detect the device type and change it which they can do.
