Hi guys, bug on facetime i've noticed on my new m1 macbook pro, when I set facetime audio to "use system setting" for microphone and speakers, on previous versions it would use the system preferences sound output and input was set to, eg. if i had no headphones plugged in it would use the macbooks microphone and speakers, and when headphones were connected it would use the headphones and headphones microphone, exactly as would happen if you plugged them into the iphone. I also have a usb c monitor with built in speakers and micrphone, previously old my old sierra macbook it would auto switch to this for facetime calls if it was connected, not any more.

On big sur though it always comes out of the macbooks speakers and microphone even if I have a headset connected, basically meaning i'm constantly changing the audio output and input of facetime depending what i've got connected.

Any one else noticed the same?
Jamie

Hi, Yes you're not alone with this issue, including myself who has contacted Apple and still awaits a resolution to the problem.

Regards,

Neil.
Yep, I think there's a lot of people with similar issues. I have a new Mac mini (M1), feeding via HDMI to LG Oled TV. Sound works excellently on most apps, however sound will not work through hdmi when using FaceTime or WhatsApp. The only solution for these apps is to select the internal speakers. Current iOS - Big Sur 11.5.1.

I think we are waisting our time contacting Apple or waiting for a fix for this this issue.
Just as in the article above I have brought this problem to Apples Customer Relations who are powerless to do anything. Its obvious that this is a extremely low priority for Apple that one of there core Apps doesn't function as advertised or intended unlike most third party products such as Microsoft Teams and Skype that function when connected this way on a Mac running macOS Big Sur.
What appalls me most is that problem has persisted since the introduction of Big Sur, that's nearly 10 months and Apple say they listen to there customers feedback, that horses*it in my opinion.

Hello,

One other important point, this problem has nothing to do with the introduction of the M1 chip.
It affected Intel Macs who updated to Big Sur when macOS Big Sur was introduced nearly 10 months ago.

I have been suffering with this issue for a long time now, using a Macbook Pro from 2020 with an Intel chip on Monterey. All I want to do is set the default audio options for Facetime so I can take calls from my Mac without the caller hanging up while I scramble to find the right audio device setting. I actually just purchased a wired USB headset for this purpose just so I don't have to also mess with my Airpods playing Bluetooth musical chairs. The idea of handoff is so great; if only this crucial piece to make it work right could be sorted out.
