Facetime bug?

Hi guys, so I got 2 new iPhones for my parents for Christmas. A bug I've discovered is when the iPhones are in standby and I try to call them via FaceTime it will not work, unless you are actually out of standby it works. Both have separate Apple ID accounts and I have cellular data off on both because they have no data plan with there mobile op,

It appears the wifi must drop off when in standby? Both of the phones have the latest iOS update.. Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated

You're correct in your assumption...here is how I found this out..

I work in I.T. and we have a client that has a guest wifi network enabled...when users connect to it, they must go to a webpage and agree to the terms and conditions before internet connectivity is active.

When they'd leave their phones sit for 5 minutes and then go to unlock them, they'd notice that they would have to authenticate again...as if they disconnected and reconnected...

What we found out is that WiFi will disable while the phone is locked..this is a "power saving" feature that is really quite dumb in my opinion. That's why if you wake up the screen of your iPhone, you'll usually see "LTE" at the top for a brief second before it changes to the WiFi icon.

So, what I believe is happening in your case, is the same thing..the phone doesn't have a data connection (since cellular is disabled), so FaceTime won't work. When you wake up the device, and the phone reconnects to the WiFi connection, it works.

I am in a hurry, so I probably didn't explain it the best, but let me know if that helps answer your question.

Thanks yes makes sense what you are saying but this is a major oversight from Apple. This must be only a new flaw because my dad has an iPad and I could FaceTime him back when he was running iOS 8 I believe ;(

I agree with you completely. Seems like an oversight. I know my Samsung Galaxy S5 stays connected to WiFi, even while idle with the screen off (have performed various tests to confirm this). So do my co-workers' Android devices.

I don't own an iPad, so I'm not sure about your experience with your Dad.

As far as I know, there's really no way to tell it to stay connected...let me know if you find anything out.
