Change the FaceTime apple I'd to a something different. Look under settings > FaceTime.

Tap on the Apple ID and delete that account (it only deletes it from FaceTime). Use a newly created AppleID and re enter it.

This does not affect any other settings on your iPad. You'll still have the original AppleID for purchases, etc.

Exactly what Cosmos suggested is how you'll get it to work. An AppleID cannot FaceTime with itself, so you can do one of two things.

Put your wife's own AppleID into the iPad and just keep your iPhone the way it is (except also adding a contact for your wife that has her AppleID in it).
OR
Remove your AppleID from your iPhone. The iPhone has a phone number that it can use as it's "AppleID" for FaceTime so by removing it from the iPhone then you are freeing up the AppleID for use with the iPad. Probably the easiest solution.

You don't need another apple ID for it. You just need a different email address. add a second email address to your contact card. And then use that as the default address for face time on the iPad. I have five FaceTime devices under my single Apple ID. They just need their own email address.
