iPhone Facial Recognition fail

So as most of you know, Apple facial recognition is a fail. Here is another way it actually fails and when I spoke with Apple about it, they really didn't give a hoot. So, If you set up apples face recog with eyes open you will need to have eyes open right? Yes and no. See, if you are asleep and someone has your phone be it a significant other, a child, or someone that has kidnapped you like the FBI/CIA/NSA, they can actually use your face and open any one eye, right or left, and your phone opens right up for them. So if you are a sound sleeper this can be a problem. I was able to prove it done with my eye rolled back in my head as well as looking off. Can the facial recognition be trusted? NO. sadly, I feel duped by Apple. I feel lied to. Now I have to go back and put in a bunch of codes for everything and I have to change settings on many things. This is sad. Oh well. Guess technology isnt all they claim it is.

What have you made facial recog do? Have you found a loophole in another way? what are your thoughts about the lack of apple security anymore?

I don't think it is a big deal - I wouldn't rely on facial recognition for serious stuff like bank passwords. If you are concerned about security, use keyed in codes.

If my girlfriend rolls over I wake up let alone touch my face... As far as someone kidnapping you, someone can force you to do anything including touchid so is that a fail too? I’d say your concern is pretty ridiculous considering. You’d even give up an alphanumeric code if they started pulling your fingernails out with pliers...

And my significant other (wife) already has my passcode and wouldn't need to use Face ID to unlock my phone (nothing to hide from her anyway)

Regardless, I think your concerns are paranoia at best

First of all: Apple facial recognition is NOT a fail. Second of all: Your theory is unrealistic.

Are you afraid that your significant other will steal your car keys when you sleep as well and run away from you and sell your car? Does that make the car a fail since it has keys that can be stolen while you sleep?

Works brilliantly for me. So much so that it's annoying that I have to use TouchID on my iPad Pro and (gasp) type in a password on my Macs. Looking forward to FaceID on all my Apple devices (wouldn't trust Google with it).

Bet if you are a sound sleeper TouchID will unlock if your finger is held to it...just sayin'

I hate faceID as much as the next guy, but if you're worried about people breaking into your house, snatching your phone and using your face to wake it up.... there's so many other things I'd be worried about at that point it isn't funny.

Solution: disable biometric unlock when you go to sleep. not sure what the shortcut is on the X, but on the 7 it is power button 5 times.

Given there is now a shortcut to disable biometrics, i'm not as anti-faceID as i used to be. I still think its worse than touchID, but the paranoia displayed by the OP is a bit over the top. I'd be more worried about a cop snatching it during a stop (after putting hands up and unable to disable biometrics, etc.) than say, break in whilst i'm asleep.

You feel "duped" because if someone has possession of you and your phone they can unlock your phone by only needing to open ONE of your eyes? Meaning, you already figured the aforementioned circumstance was ok but would require opening both of your eyes?

I'm assuming you weren't ok with touchID since that would be even easier if you were incapacitated in someway?

I can't argue the fact there is a security concern (of some sort) there however someone can make you tell them your passcode much easier than that. Threatening a loved one for example, or shooting one of your kneecaps so you know how bad the second one will hurt.

The OP is about security not privacy.

FaceID is using more of a hash function. Privacy isn't in anyway compromised. The data can accurately identify you to your face but can't be used to reconstruct your face.

This is how most services deal with passwords and why they can't give you your old password if you forget it. You'll be required to reset it entirely using a trusted facility such as email or text.

The data is also only stored locally when Apples "secure enclave" which is proving to be very secure.

Your image is public property though, in a sense anyway. Depending on where you live your image is captured constantly, gas stations, traffic cameras, pretty much every store, etc. Even strangers can take a picture of you as long as you don't have the "expectation of privacy" (bathrooms, locker room, etc) and they can do whatever they want with the image short of sell it for a profit in many scenarios. Associating a name to the face is done in many government buildings, some banks, many casinos, etc...

While I greatly respect your right to privacy (I'm a very large advocate of privacy) condemning Apples FaceID is not only based off of lack of knowledge its counterproductive to your cause because Apple went to great lengths to address privacy concerns.
