George ate 60 marshmallows in the same time that Jake ate 55. If George ate 1 marshmallow per minute more than Jake, then how many did each eat per minute?

* I was thinking:

60 = 55

60 +1 (60)(x) 55 (60)(x)
_____ = ___
60 x

61x = 3300
___ ____
61 61

x= 54

But i dont think thats right.

Do you mean expand and simplify completely? Because the only thing you can really do is take out powers of 2 from the leading coefficients.

b)

Reduce the following completely:

(2a -b)^4
__________

(b-2a)^7

For this problem, think about how you can factor the denominator to make it look like the numerator.

c) Reduce the following:


3a^2 -2a -5
___________
27a^3 -125

You can factor the numerator and denominator very easily, after which you'll get factors to cancel.

d) Simplify each of the following completely

15x^2 -3x^3 x^2 -3x-10
___________ / ___________
6x^2 - 24x x^2 -2x -8

Take what you know about dividing by fractions to turn this into a multiplication problem. Factor and cancel as before.

e) Solve the problem using rational equation skills.

other than factoring out the 8, you can factor using difference/sum of cubes.

a^3 + b^3 = (a + b) (a^2 - ab + b^2)

For the last one, its:

60-55= 5

So they ate 60 and 55 marshmellows in 5 minutes (Seeing as how he ate 1 more per minute)
60/5= 12
55/5=11
