I do not currently have a contract/account with AT&T but I have bought a factory unlocked (I often travel to the UK) 3G S from Italy. I have heard that AT&T now have month-to-month contracts if you do not get a phone with them (the 2yr contract is to pay off the heavily subsidised mobile I believe) so I went ahead and bought a AT&T SIM card on Ebay. My question is how do I get the month-to-month deal. Do I just activate the SIM on AT&T's website and go on from there or do I need to call them? I'd rather not have to go to an AT&T store.

SIM cards from AT&T should be free, no?
I had a hand-me-down 2G iPhone that I wanted to set up for my daughter. I walked in to an AT&T store, asked for a SIM, and they just handed one to me.

Hope you didn't pay too much for that SIM card(unless it's a prepaid with minutes and a data plan perhaps?) Otherwise, you should just go to AT&T and tell them you want to activate a new plan, they'll try to give you a "free" phone, but decline that since it will require a 2-year contract. Just show them you have the iPhone and want to sign up for the data plan and any SMS package if you want that. Make sure to tell them you don't want any "free" phone or anything else that would require you to sign a 2-year contract and you should be good to go.

Most likely the SIM card is just the one that came installed in the iPhone and AT&T will have to activate that when they're giving you your number.
