Factory unlocked 3GS .VS. old Bootrom 3GS

Hello guys,

U have to know that I need an unlock where I live now...

which one will you buy and why ?

- An iPhone 3GS Factory Unlocked but with new bootrom.. (so it has to be plugged to a computer every time it's turned off)

OR

- An iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom (but NOT factory unlocked).

Basically the two are the same price.. I'm confused and I need some tips from you...

Go with the old bootrom - In the UK you can request a factory unlock at anytime with O2 - It may be the same where you are??

as terraphantm said, Since i'll be jailbreaking either way (love cydia apps..), I think it's better to go with the old bootrom...

But the thing is, I heard that there is a solution for the new bootrom but it wont be released before the new iPhone arrives in June... If that's true, I think I can live with the new bootrom for few months until the solution is released... By doing this I'll be on the safe side in the future by having a factory unlocked iPhone...

@dav146, I live in Lebanon.. there's no official iPhone carriers here :S
 
Easy, go with the factory unlocked one, which should cost more. So if they're the same price, why pick the one with lower value?
 
Well, you don't say anything about the software versions that they are now on, the answer can affect the whole jailbreaking situation. In the absence of that, I'd say go with the factory unlocked one, for this reason:

If at any time you have to restore the phone, you will only be able to restore it to the latest firmware, and you will lose your unofficial unlock, possibly for ever. If you get the factory unlocked one then you know it will always be unlocked, and always usable in Lebanon, whether you can jailbreak it or not.

Of course having a factory unlocked phone is good, but I'm worried about the new bootrom problem... Do you know anything about a solution coming in June ???
 
Official unlock from O2 UK costs £15 for Pay As You Talk or FREE if you are a contract customer. That is why I would get an old bootrom and then pay £15 for the official unlock.

So your saying that if i go to the UK and i buy a Paygo Sim card i can choose to unlock it for 15?

I have the new iBoot and it's no big deal. I just reboot my phone every day.

It used to crash every now and then due to a faulty jailbreak with Blackra1n but it's all better now. No problems since.

It's really not that big of a deal. I'll be gracious when the new iBoot is hacked though.

But it needs to be an iPhone FROM the UK. You can't just ask O2 to unlock an iPhone you didn't bought from them.
 
i dont see why people are so against the tethered jailbreak. mine is tethered and i very rarely reboot it. if i ever do im not far away from a pc to boot it up again.

id go with the factory unlock then you wont have any of the problems some people have been having, for example with wifi

Forget the idea of making the (old bootrom) iPhone factory unlocked, Its just not feasible since I live in Lebanon....

By getting the factory unlocked one I'll be 100% sure that my phone will always be usable... But I'm worried about the new bootrom problem...

Does the 3GS crashes a lot if it's jailbroken and full of cydia apps...?? Is the blackra1n really better now?? Will there be a solution soon for the new bootrom?? :S

I have a 3G and it crashes a lot when I use backgrounder, proswitcher, winterboard.... if this also happens to the 3GS then I'm definitely going with the old bootrom...

PS: the iDongle is very interesting !! Hope it'll be released soon..

No, the 3GS runs alot smoother and faster than the 3G. Offcourse the 3G will crash when you background alot since its resources are limited.
Blackrain is ok, I'd go with Redsnow though.
There might be a solution for the new bootrom in the future..
I dont know about the idongle thing. All you gotta do is have a USB stick with blackrain and a USB wire. Im sure you'll find a computer to run it for less than a minute if you ever need to.

Sounds like a good plan... :) I think I'll be choosing the factory unlocked iPhone..
