Has this pop-up when trying to install Monterey today. Is there an easy way for a non-nerd to fix?

Did you erase the disc first and if so, how?
And on what machine?
I didn't delete anything. Just update it through Software update. At 34% it shows this error. Deleted the Installer and re-downlaod again. Got the same error again.
I thought this is an error for Big Sur update but clearly it's still there on Monterrey.

So this was an upgrade attempt from BS to Monterey on a M1 MBA.
I can confirm that I did exactly the same upgrade with exactly the same machine as you and it went absolutely seemlessly.
That's perplexing.

Right now there is 43 GB available. Installer (~12 GB) already in HDD.

From looking through Google there doesn't seem to be an easy fix 😔
Thanks. It's hard to know how much space would be required. Obviously it needs 12GB for the installer but it will need considerably more than that to actually run the upgrade as I think it reserves space for what's already on there in case the upgrade fails.
I have no idea how much space that may be though :-(

Rebooted. Get the same error.
I see, thanks. Maybe I'm on the wrong tack then.
I read one report that suggested that to upgrade you'd need 12GB plus at least 35GB on top to actually run the upgrade.
However, as you said you've now got about 68GB that may not be the reason.

Ah, I see your last post and are going to try safe mode. Let us know! :)

Anyone figure out a workaround? I'm getting this on a M1 mini.

I've tried the recovery and installing from external HDD, both in normal recovery and in safe mode, with no luck.

Have erased and restarted after each failed attempt.

I was seeing the error message on Mac OS 12.2.1 on my M1 MacBook Air when trying to update to 12.3.1. After three attempts to update using Software Update I gave up.

I did figure out a work around for this issue.

First download the full Mac OS installer using the AppStore app.

Then create a bootable SD card or USB flash drive from the image file using the command below in terminal:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume <your volume here>
- The installer for Monterey needs to be in the /Applications folder.
- To obtain your volume's path simply drag your flash drive or SD card's icon onto the terminal's window.

You then want to start your computer up from the boot volume. The installer will appear. Proceed with installing the update on your hard drive.
- The Startup disk pane in System Preferences doesn't seem to allow you to select this boot disk. So on an M1 Mac you would have to hold down the power button when starting up your computer until you see the startup options. The boot volume should appear on this screen. Select it and boot from the drive.

I was able to successfully install Mac OS 12.3.1 on my M1 MacBook Air using this method.

Last week I got a brand new Macbook Air M1, went through the setup and installed the microsoft office suite. Whenever I tried to download software from the apple app store or update the OS to the latest version I would get this message. Called Apple support and after talking to a couple of their support people one had me delete everything on the hard disk and reinstall the OS. And whenever I tried to do that I would get the same message. They had me send the MBA back and I got the replacement today.
After getting through the setup the first thing I tried to do is to update the OS (it came with 12.2.1). Exact same thing happened, the download completed but when it tries to install I get the same message. Still unable to connect to the app store.

Worked with apple support and tried to do update in safe mode. Got same message. Tried to do an update on another mba at work and got the same unable to personalize message. Took the new mba and tried to do an update on my home network and it worked. I'm wondering if something on the office firewall is interfering with it. Everything else internet related works at the office, except youtube.

Took both MBA's home and tried to update on my home wifi. Both updated to the latest version on Monterey with no problems. I think something in my work firewall is corrupting the updates and causing the unable to personalize message.
