I recently bought as 2017 (escape keys) MBP intel i5 with 8GB ram. I took a chance as it was listed as for parts. I got opened it up to see if there was any liquid damaged before I plugged it in. There was none. I noted the Hard drive sticker was still there but it had been pulled as if the drive removed. Put it back together and booted, took a while question mark folder. I got my Monterey usb stick put it in and in disk utility no listing for the ssd.

Opened it again when I unscrewed the screws the drive just kind fell out, as if someone did not inserted in correctly. Put it back and it booted into catalina and did the setup wizard and it was working until I shut it down next power up got the folder question mark. Several reboots and attempts at Pram reset and nothing.

At this point I google and maybe its the SSD failing I am attempting to install and OS on a external drive and run it this was to make sure the reset of system is ok before I buy a new SSD. Monterey failed to installed as it telling me it needs a firmware upgrade.
Anyhow in one of those failed attempts the internal SSD boots and Im back in catalina, it reboots and it gone again.

So does this sound like a failing SSD or a failing PCI connector.

sorry for the long novel.

Macbook Pro 13" 2016 and 2017 with function keys are know for failed disks.
Apple launched a service program (not available anymore) a few years ago.
You can find plenty of disks on eBay. (Search: a1708 macbook ssd)
I recommend a genuine one and also the 512GB model to avoid the failing ones (128GB and 256GB).

Disconnect the battery when removing the disk. Also the speaker to avoid forcing the connector!

Thank you the disk in it is a 512GB
its possible that this disk is failing

If the disk doesn't show up (from time to time) in the Disk Utility, statistically speaking, you have a failed disk.
Most eBay sellers accept returns, so it is a low-risk bet.
