Hi All,

I'm having my MBP mid 2015 and my purchase from Amazon just arrived with -
Samsung 980 Pro
Sintech NVME adapter

My MBP is running Monterey 12.5 OSx.
My boot room is - EFI Version: MBP114.88Z.F000.B00.2204181521 (Boot ROM Version: 430.140.3.0.0)

Unfortunately, while trying to upgrade the SSD with the new one it seems the new HD is not being detected by Mojave OS and i'm really lost.
i tried to create usb boot drive and installing the OS from scratch but still not recognizing the OS.

Could you please advise what should i do in order to be able to use my new SSD?

Thanks in advanced,

Are you using the short or long adapter?

It could be one of 4 things:

  1. the drive isn't compatible;
  2. the drive isn't compatible without a firmware update (the 970 Pro needed a firmware update to work);
  3. the drive is defective; and/or
  4. the adapter is defective.

I haven't been following the thread for a while but I can say that higher-performance drives will result in higher battery drain.

The 980 Pro may be suitable so I recommend asking for advice in the link I posted.

Do you still have the ORIGINAL drive that came from the factory?
Have you tried putting that back in?

Reason why (and I'm a bit shaky on this):
The OS upgrade may involve a firmware update -- which WILL NOT INSTALL unless the updater "sees" the presence of a factory-installed drive.
(Or perhaps it will succeed with a 3rd-party drive with updated firmware, not sure about that).

Solution may be to put the factory drive back in, get the OS/firmware updated, then put the 3rd-party drive in and update the OS on that...

Hello.,
Today, I have to resolve the same problem as your situation. My resolve method is to set the new SSD on a Windows PC and format it. Then, install the new SSD on MBP and reinstall the OSx. You should find the new SSD. Good luck to you.

If your MacBook is running a High Sierra bootrom or newer and you install High Sierra or newer, there is no need to do prepare the SSD on a Windows computer. I have installed several NVMe drives and never needed Windows unless there was a need to update the SSD's firmware before installing the drive in a MacBook.

Hello,
Did you find the solution ? Are you be able to use Samsung 980 Pro with that sintech adapter ?
I have MBP mid 2015 15" currently using sintech adapter with adata SX8200PNP the speed is R/W around 1000Mb, while looking at this samsung 980 it offer blazing fast 6000Mb which is i really wanted that speed
