So, I've never heard this sound before today.  Granted, in my usual lappy setting (my office and home), it's a bit more noisy than it is in my present location (I'm out of town, atm) so it may have been making this sound since the beginning and I wouldn't know it, but... The lappy is the one in my sig (Rev.E 17" PB stock except for 2GB of crucial ram that I installed about a month ago).

The sound it makes is a faint, tinny (or nasal-ish, i know it's a weird description) "beep." It doesn't do it more than once at a time, nor does it seem to be following any sort of pattern based on my actions or the time. It seems to be from under the keyboard in the middle. I already thought of iCal alarms, but I've never used the "To Do" event alarms in iCal. I just use the regular calendar features.

I'm not too concerned yet, as it seems not to be accompanied by any odd or performance-impairing behavior; however, I would like to see if anyone else has experienced this and what it may be. Thanks a bunch for the help! :)

Does it disappear if you mute your volume?

Hmmm...I'm not sure about that one. Do you think it may be coming from the speakers? It doesn't sound to me like it is, but then again it's difficult to pin down the exact location from which it's eminating.

I'll give it a try. Thanks! :)

At a guess, I reckon it might just be your hard drive. I know newer notebook hard drives make a bit of a squeak noise every now and then. I've never noticed anything form my iBook but the case is a bit thicker/more insulated. I'd be interested to hear what others think though.

I wouldn't be too worried about it at this stage because, as you say, there isn't anything negative associated with it. :)

Cool! That's about what I was thinking after sitting around in a silent room listening to it for a while. It seems the hdd makes funny noises (barely audible in silence) that would otherwise go unnoticed in the regular day-to-day environment. That sounds like a prime culprit. Luckily, there's probably nothing to worry about...phew! :) Thanks again for the help, Mad.

Though, I'm with you in that I would like to see if anyone else has experienced this...anyone? :)

my 17" pb makes the noises you describe. if i can remember correctly, it does it when i type on the keyboard. sometimes it will do it by itself. i was thinking it had something to do with the processor but the hard drive answer sounds more likely. i don't think processors can physically make noise. hard drives can.

My Thinkpad T43 makes that sound as well. You can only hear it in a very quiet room so I don't let it bother me. I'm not sure where it comes from tho.
